I have a 74 bus, T2b. Is it possible to switch out my current stock bumpers for the stock bumpers that came on early bay windows? or would custom metalwork need to be done to do this? |

I suspect you can only go back as far as '73 unless there is some magic out there somebody knows. Check out the illustrations posted on bustedvw.com
(Finding a rear bumper and parts for our '70 was a challenge. Getting the thing on was, too.)

I have looked into doing this conversion. the rear bumper is not a huge problem. You could pretty easily modify a old style bumper to attach to a late style bumper mount. The front is almost impossible unless you replace the entire nose skin. A pre-1971 Bus (with old style bumpers) has a flat nose skin. The bumper is attached with brackets that go underneath the front of the bus and mount to the frame underneath. On a later model bus, the nose is not flat at the bottem but rather it sticks out in roughly the same shape as the bumper. The bumper then directly mounts to this shape. You would have to basically shear this part off the nose to get it to work. |
