Actually this one looks real good also. Courtesy of the gallery...
Not "Super High Gloss" like some of the base coat / clear coat paint jobs I've seen. _________________ PRAISE THE LOWERED.

No, I'm sure the first photo is older than a '74. It's a euro model (note the tail lights) w/ no side muffs. I don't know anything about the car...again courtsey of the gallery. I just thought it had the right look - color - sheen - etc. _________________ PRAISE THE LOWERED.

To get a view of the original paint reflection quality, gloss to dull can often be found under the bottom of the front hood if it hasn't been repainted. Clean it off with mild soap without polishing. Satin not gloss is the original finish as has been mentioned. This was to reduce the visibility of minor scratches from going thru the brush. I still prefer a nice gloss since I don't go thru the brush. :D _________________ Ya can't have too many Vdubs!

On my fancy white Thing that I had and now have back it had a special flattener added to the paint to give it the original semi gloss look. Parked next to my original paint car it is really close to factory. I don't know if you are going to get much real information from pictures but if you find a auto paint supply place and ask them about flattening agents you can get some good info. One thing to be aware of is that using the flatteners makes the paint harder to match. It also has a tendency to pick up grease marks that would wipe off of a shiny paint job. I really like the look of it though.
Hope this helps,

The other issue with satin or semi-gloss paint is the fact that it is very hard to protect. There is no way to use standard automotive waxes to protect the paint from oxidization. Ir it's going to be kept in a garage, or if you are planning on repainting this won't be an issue. Mine has to live outside in the sub-tropics so keeping wax on is vital to keeping my paint on.
The original paint code for my orange thing was L30F. The "F" stands for flat. |

Paint codes for VW Things are listed here:
http://www.geocities.com/vwtyp181/181_2-4.htm
Found in the sticky thread called "Thing/181 Web Resources" - "VW 181 Facts and Figures- aka 'Hanno Spoelstra's Site'"
The paint code for green is L60F "Avocado Green". Getting it is no problem. Getting it to match your existing paint is another story. Check out the Body/Paint forum for more info on that.
