Hey folks -
Am looking at a 79 Westy with the 2.0l FI engine. Just how reliable are these? I see that parts are at least availible (and not much more than modern FI parts). Are these engines reliable? Do they run well? Break down often? Whats yer opinion?
Thanks!

i prefer carburated, its a little easier to understand, more people know about carburators than fuel injection, i drive a 73 bus, with dual webers, my dad has a 78 champaign edition with 2L fuel injection, he hasnt had any problems what so ever with it, but the fuel injected motors can be converted to run carbs, so it basically comes down to what you want, and how much money you can spend.
good luck

IMHO if you can keep the FI going as long as possible without having to spend alot on parts, maybe a new temp sensor every 2 years ( just because...) or a double relay to keep the fuel pump happy..... then it is a good system. It gets good milage and makes pretty good power on the 2.0L...
Troubles occur when the age and heat take their toll on the wiring harness and if the engine has to come in and out... then thats when gremlins move in....
And if the person(s) doing the work aren't knowlegeable and careful it just gets worse.
If it's been messed with due to someone trying to "figure out why it's running crappy" and they don't know that much it get's worse yet.....
Otherwise keep it alive and put some $$$ aside for the one day when carbs will be a cheaper option than repairing the system as a whole..... |
