Got a new fuel sender for x-mas ( late model sender from bus depot)...( i have a 1978, 2 liter camper). Has 2 wires that go to it, if I hook it up one way the needle drops below empty ....if I hook it up the other way needle goes way past full.....only have about 1/2 tank of gas in it......(with old sender needle never moved-was always on empty)......did I put it in wrong, maybe hanging up on something, float arm doesn't seem bent....any suggestion..... |

is this out of the tank or in the tank? _________________ "Most people don't know what they're doing, and a lot of them are really good at it." - George Carlin |

The way that shows empty is correct (assuming your tank is MT) as in the wire with the stripe on the insulated terminal, when it's out of the tank and you hook it up does the gauge move as you move the float? _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

2 wires correct? One wire should be ground to frame, goes on the lug that's welded to sender, second wire goes to gauge, isolated by plastic on sender.
If you ground the wire to gauge it should show full tank. All connections clean and tight. You can also ground at the gauge cluster in the cab. if that doesn't work you may have a bad gauge.

its installed in the tank right now (fit right into place and tapped it a few times to turn and lock it in)..when I had sender out of the tank and moved the float up and down the gauge would move also ( its a little slow but I think thats normal )...and yes when I had old sender still installed the gauge would go all the way to full when wire removed and grounded ( from what I read this should indicate wires and guage are working)...guess I just need to pull it out and try again.... |

Yep and if left there for too long may cook the gauge. I learned the hard way on that one. _________________

Don't overlook the fuel gauge vibrator. Your original one may have been good. |

It has been my experience that the replacement VDO senders are extremely inaccurate and all the bending in the world will not make them read all that well. Don't know if there is something better out there or not. May try just rewinding an old one the next time I have one go bad. |
