=-) Hello....In a few weeks i am going to set out on a 10 hour ROAD TRIP!!! To pick up a 1969 21-window Split. I think. haha.
This lady i work with said she has one sitting down in Atlanta and it needs restored. So she said she wants a beautiful person to have and restore it. I guess thats me! =-) So right now im trying to learn as much as i can about it so that when i go pick it up Ill have some clue of what im in for. So im wondering, Is there a site or a specific book i can get that will tell me EVERYTHING about this bus ( all the different original options, colors, features) all the good stuff. I anyone can help me or give m some far out leads on some info Id be so greatful!
Peace! Kyle |

They stopped making splits for North America in 1968, changing to the bay window style. Anyways, this is a great site for finding stuff out, but also try type2.com for starters. Good Luck, Jeremy
ps are you planning on driving it home? |

Your trip will be disappointing if you're looking for a 69 21 window?.....If you want to find out at least what year it is, have them front you the VIN # from the title or vehicle. The first three digits will tell you what you'll be driving home first two digits are model (ex 21-panel,22 microbus,23 kombi,24 micro deluxe,25 seven seater,26 pick up etc) The third digit is last year of production ex 232 is a 1972 kombi. This is only confusing because you can confuse 68-69 w/ 78 and 79. unless you look at the lug pattern on the wheels 5X205 is old one (wide five) and 5x112 (small bolt circle). get that info and you'll have an idea what you'll be finding when you get there. Take someone knowledgable with tools (or $ for a u haul trailer) good luck |

check w/ amazon and get the 'original vw bus' book by Laurence Meredith and decide whether you should undertake this potentially expensive endeavor. They may be just passing a rusty old headache to you. |

I didnt realize this until now, But my friend just bought the book a few days ago..Its a really good book. If the bus is restorable, then i'll be really happy that i got such an amazing piece of VW history. If its rusty and not worth it, then the 20 hour drive there and back will be worth it, Nothing like a Road Trip. There are a few other buses there that are around the same year, Im hoping some parts are inter-changeable. Plus, this bus is going to be sold to the crusher sometime soon, and will be destroyed, If nothing else ill let it rust away in my backyard =-) |
