With the key on, ground the wire at the sender unit. The gauge should read full. If not, it's the wire or the gauge. If grounding it makes it go to full, the sender is shot.

your saying to ground out the power wire to the sender and that should read full

and ill check for the stuck needle

but if it goes to full then the sender is bad
but if it doesnt then the wire or the gauge is bad

what is it supposed to do if its good and not just stuck

sender
wire
gauge

"your saying to ground out the power wire to the sender and that should read full "

Yes, except that wire is not a power wire, it goes to ground through the resistance in the sender unit, which varies with fuel level. Unplug the wire at the sender, and touch it to a ground (like a mounting screw).

If the gauge now reads full, you know the gauge is probably working.
If the gauge does not read full, the wire or gauge is defective.

what are the lights in a 67
1- ?the bright lights?
2- is the little light a fuel almost empty light
3- red- power
4- green - generator

If your brakes don't work (ie no pressure at the master) your brake lights won't work since they sense pressure at the master (not pedal travel)

Maybe a dumb question, but did you let the motor warm up any?
I don't know how to test in the car.

brakes work great now
Maybe a lil' bleeding needed but...

oil temp...
Thats why im asking

Its like 25 degrees outside
and i let her idle for about 10 - 15min or so

Then took her on a short drive (oil pressure down to about 25-30)
stopped in a parking lot
and checked the wires and what not.

Dont know how long it should take to get above 120

i have the flaps wired open
So i would think it would take longer,
but I havent had a chance to take her to the highway.

How long should it take to get it >120* this time of the year

When i hook it up it moves slightly
Makes me think that the gauge is working but??

what about a test light or a meter or something

to test to see if its -sending-or-receiving-or-???

"me" ...yeah, Not an electrician

I can read a multimeter OK
enough to see if its working

VDO senders and gauges (normally)
are 10-180 ohms, yes?

Just dont know what or how to test electronics

Is that 120C or F? Might take longer for it to move if it is 120C (250F).

HA...

the gauge is a VDO oil temp
from 120* to 300*

I think when i get home i will take the "water" temp gauge (got it with the set off Ebay) and hook it up

Its the same style and rating as the oil temp
that will help me in figuring out if its the sender or the gauge.

So i took the sender out of the case.

I hooked the sender up to the sender post on the gauge
and had to ground it to the light ground.

At first Nothing...
put it in what i thought was HOT water
obviously not hot enough.

Then i took a small torch to it and BAM it started to rise.
It grounds to the case , correct?

IS It that im not getting over like 140 in temp???

Isnt that too cool?

I have taken her on an, atleast, 20 miles or so there and back
and i dont see it go above 130 or 140 or so

thats why i thought the sender was broken...

I Just Dont Get It

I thought that idling for 10 to 15 minutes And a 40 mile drive
would take her atleast above 180

or is it maybe somethings not reading correct
I gotta get a candy thermometer or something.
