|

We packed up and left Salt Lake City last Wednesday morning and headed south through Price and Green River, turned west on I-70 and the south on Utah 24 through Hanksville. We were looking for a new place to explore called the Dirty Devil Overlook. After driving some miles south of Hanksville, we turned east for about 11 miles of dirt road and cows on BLM land we came to the Burr Point overlook. It was very windy and cool, but this is what we found:
Because it was so windy, we needed to find a more sheltered campsite so we drove some of the 2 tracks around the rim and found a place where a jeep road dropped down. The first part was a small ledge I felt I could come back up in my 2WD.
The snow capped peaks to the west are the Henry Mountains. We camped here 3 nights, hiked and biked on the Jeep road and did not see another soul.
One more view of the overlook on our way out.
We went into Hanksville, got water and a great hamburger and then headed up the "Little Egypt" road in the Henry Mountains.
A couple of cabins along the way.
A long steep (1st gear) road went almost straight up the mountain before cutting at an angle to the right. It provided a great view of where we were camped the last few nights.
Up into the aspen trees:
We came to a 3-way junction, the right to Wikiup Pass, the left to another pass and straight to a mine. We turned toward Wikiup Pass which should take us back to Hanksville. The road became even steeper and rockier and was cut into the side of a very steep barren hillside. Then we came to some more trees and a patch of snow. End of the road for us. There was a track of a car that had been there before us and a motorcycle track, but other than that we were probably the only others that had been up that high.
I backed down a ways and did a 6 point turn to head back down.
We returned to the 3-way junction and camped nearby.
The next morning was windy and cold so we headed down the mountain and north through Hanksville and Green River. We then headed up the Green River to Swasey Beach where we were somewhat protected from the wind and blowing sand. We then went to the State Park in Green River for showers and drove to the Price River near Woodside and spent our last night there. Mountain biked down the river before heading home. |
