i turn my stock non gas powered heater on, and its way too hot i'm wondering if this could mean that the engine is running too hot and what to do?
i have a new 1600 engine in a 1970 transporter
could it be something like a tight valve or does my heat just work really well?

thanks

This is a gag right? Where the hell do you live? Hell?

Seriously, super retarded timing and a lean mixture would be the only cause that comes to mind, if you can't fix it wanna trade?

If your system is tight from front to back.... er back to front... there's no reason for it not to be pumping some good heat. My '74 will make me sweat when I'm rolling. My '71 did pretty well too but it was stinky from leaky heat exchangers... My '77 was missing too many parts to even think about it...

So many people give these buses a bad rap about heat, but water cooled engines run about 180 - 200 degrees through the heating system at best. These ACVW's run exhaust temps way above that where the heat comes from, so it only makes sense if you can capture that heat and get it up front before it leaks out or cools too much, you'll be getting seriously warm air up front. Maybe you just have a good tight system.

Yeah good heat in VW's... it's rare... but it happens...

im starting to think its an engine over heating problem
i did an oil change today
and valve adjustment
and after that it ran nice but after driving about half an hour it was really hot i pulled of to the side of the road and the engine was really hot.
so im out of ideas

it could be timing i guess
i will check tomorrow

What's the outside temperature where you live? VW heaters work great to about 40 degrees F.

Can you hold your dipstick when the engine is on? If not it's definitely running too hot. Check ignition/timing. What's your carb/distributor set-up?

How long have you owned your van? Is this a new ride for you that you are not familiar with? Has your heater worked differently in the past? There are many things that can cause an engine to run hot. What else has changed since you noticed your heater output seemed high? Gas mileage down, power down?

I highly recommend you get a stock carb; I'm not sure what came with the '70 1600sp motor - aircooled.net should be able to hook you up. But if your dipstick's not hot I wouldn't worry too much. Heat at 50 degrees should be plenty hot. Try it at 10 degrees!!

is it possible to put to much oil in and have it effect the muffler?

The muffler should get hot enough to burn your hand in 30 seconds, hot exhaust gasses are normal.

Everything you are describing sounds normal, if it's making too much heat move the red levers on the dash up a bit. A little smoke or vapor under the oil cap is normal, overfilling it isn't good though, maybe drain a bit off so it comes to the top mark on the dipstick. The tin at the back does get warm, after all it's right over the almost red hot muffler, check that all the rubber seals surrounding the engine are in good shape and no road is visible from above. Your carb could be correct if you have a dual port engine installed but you should ditch the non vacuum distributor asap.

Hot exhaust (and heater boxes) can be a sign of timing not set right. If the timing has insufficient advance, the combustion is still going on when the exhaust valve opens and it (combustion) continues in the exhaust system.

In fact, a trick to get more heat out of your vehicle is to retard the timing 2 deg at a time until either you get enough heat or you motor stops running so well.

What's your timing at max advance? 1600s do well with anywhere from 28 to 34 degrees BTDC. If you're in that range and it's running well, leave it alone.

Start a campfire between the seats... haha that's what Click and Clack described Eberspacher heaters being as dangerous as...

I used to use a propane camp heater between the front seats. Instant heat! The windows would fog up good though. I never really worried about the danger of fire as the heater was right next to me and nothing ever happened.

Jeepers, after about 40 seconds you don't want to touch my muffler...at least not without an asbestos glove

My heater runs too hot as well. It makes my 16-inch-long manhood sweat. Razz
