85, 1.9
was trying to trace down this odd hesitation when i go WOT at 1 point i pulled the electrical connector off this white vacum valve ?? in the top right corner of the rear firewall, well that cured this hestiation...
Well it looks like this valve is leaking or failing some how since when i put the vacum guage on the engine vacum is about 5 lbs lower with the electrical connection on ..
anyone have the part # it really does not seem to make any different to engine running what is it actually supposed to do ?

You can live without the device that adjusts the idle for the power steering. There can be 2 of these mounted on the left: one for the power steering, and one for the Air Condition.
I have power steering, and a previous owner removed the device on the left side of the engine bay that is supposed to increase the idle when the steering is turned sharp left or right. My 84 1.9 does not stall when I do this.
However, my Air conditioner is currenty disabled (belt is removed from the AC compressor, so I cannot vouch for this. _________________ Current VW drives: 1984 Westfalia

Those idle boost solenoid valves are very hard to find. _________________ Shop for unique and useful Vanagon accessories at the Vanistan shop:

ah interesting yah my van will now stall if I am in parking lot trying to execute some real tight left to right turning maneuvers
but the vacuum is no longer reading 11 it up to 16
and i don't have the weird hesitation when i go wot
do we have an orientation issue you say left side
do you mean the driver side ???
OK i just went to van
I mean mine is on the right rear firewall passenger side
its a white ceramic unit with 2 vacuum lines attached and a 2 wire connector (not 3/4 i said earlier)
going to the black box (with the 2 relay)
that is on the left rear firewall driver side
here are pics

That's the booster fer sure. You may cave a cracked vacc line somewhere in the loop or the valve has failed (will not open). Ohm test it for an open circut. _________________ LEARN TO SELF RESCUE

I was refering to turning the steering wheel all the way to the left or right, which I believe puts the power steering pump at it's greatest pump pressure output.
I cannot say for sure if a mechanic from previous ownership compensated for the removal of this idle adjuster circuit by turning the air screw on my 84.
I can say for certainty that my 1.9 idles smooth, with it's power steering pump operational, and without the valve you are talking about.
If you need one, I may have 1 or 2 of these in a box. _________________ Current VW drives: 1984 Westfalia
