Does anyone service/synchro graph the Mallory unilite distributor?
I want to get mine checked out as my idle timing was a little erratic recently.
-I bought the one ACN used to offer with the vacuum advance.
-Checked with the VW guy in AZ and he doesn't mess with Mallory units.

It might not be the distributor it could be installaltion..

What I would suggest is that yo do a quick manual test, the one I use with swapmeet Bosch distributors..

If you take the distributor cap off and manually try to rotate the rotor arm in both directions.
In one direction it should come against the end stop of minimum advance with a fairly solid stop, in the other direction it should have a progressive spring loading until you hit the maximum advance. There should be no backlash.

If there is, check the distributor is seated properly into the engine block and that there is a spring between the distributor nose and the top of the distributor drive.

If the distributor is riding high then there can be backlash between the distributor and the drive slot. And the spring helps to stop the drive gear bouncing around causing timing scatter when the engine idles roughly because it has timing scatter...and so on.

Some rattly installations are "smoother" with points because the points follower causes friction that holds the backlash at one end of its range. Fitting an electronic module removes the friction and it rattles around.

All this is one reason I went crank fire.

It's the optical Heimlich.
-I received your email yesterday about not being able to test the electronic type.

I'll email you there and we can continue. I might be able to modify my setup to test what you have. I built it out for Hall sensors so I just need to know what you have.
