If at least some of you are like me, you like to read a good story, long or short. The hunting threads in split and bay bus forums are entertaining, at least for me even though I drive a bug and vanagons. So why haven´t anyone started a "today in vanagon hunting history thread? I read the "good deals" thread, but more often than not they are just adverts. Are our vanagons considered not old enough? I´m just curious As I´d like to read a good story or two about cars being found.. You see, I found one of mine under a three behind an outbuilding.. |

yeah we really don't hunt that many of our vans out in the woods fields or dark barns..
we tend to chase them down back alleys and night clubs or micro breweries
also it's not so much of a trophy as they over romanticized Bays and splits.
hell the split people are only just noticing the Bays in the last few years..
plus vanagons aren't quite too precious to use just yet.. give them another 5-10 yrs and we may get priced out of ownership here too.
want to go hunting Vanagons.. take a search in Pulaski, Va. _________________

You cannot have a Vanagon hunting thread without a Jagdwagen:
But maybe you didn't mean hunting with a Vanagon... _________________ 1991 VW Multivan syncro 1,9 TD |

Shoot - from the subject line I thought this was going to be about a lumpy idle. |

Well if it counts I hauled a moose home in my syncro . Or, I just bought an old snowmachine last weekend and got to BSing about vws and the guy told me he knew where an abandoned syncro was under some power lines among a few other cars... . There will be some hunting. |

This was my first thought too. Or at least a "hunting idle".
Is Google Earth useful for hunting Vanagons? _________________ 1981 Westy DIY 15º ABA

Honestly in the area where I live and work vanagons are pretty much as rare as a bay, splitty, or really anything aircooled. In my own hunting, and I do travel for work, but I have seen exactly 1 lurking vanagon in need of rescue, and the owner's son "was going to fix it up one day".
I check craigslist pretty regularly, but that's usually people who either know what they have and have it priced at market value, or people who think it's as valuable as a splitty or other rarity...I can remember exactly 2 in the last 5+ years that stood out in a good way - a dead, field find air-cooled Westy for $500, and a beautiful parked-in-a-garage-since grandpa-died 20-years-ago late 80s Westy with all literature, screens, etc, for I think $4000. Both were GONE by the time I made contact within a few hours after posting...
so basically the hunt continues without any great stories...
(but I, too, love to read of other more successful endeavors) _________________ <---Air Cooled Search & Rescue Team - STICKERS & T-shirts for sale!

I usually start my 3rd browser up, pull in and park on thesamba for a few chuckles in the classifieds, then + a tab for CL. Starts with Vanagon, dropdown to several local'ish areas of the country, next, edit search to 'volkswagen' 1955-2002, then "volkswagon", then subaru 1991-1995, then Mercedes in the tires and rims.
But, my real hunt is on the open road. Any barns I can peer into, any old farms where there are a bunch of cars parked in the back, it works best when I am the passenger. I know of 5 or 6 AirCooled units, one is a Bay, one Ghia, two bugs... the folks who own the properties are also known to be persons not to get too close with. At least from the comments of neighbors. A couple dozen years ago I was shown a 'collection' of VW's in south central Minnesota in a barn. Perhaps 18 vehicles. I get lost every time I try to find that farm again now. The fellow was open to offers, at that time.
Hmmm... wonder if my numbers from last night's powerball matched for 10K or more.... all I won so far was 2$.
Good thread right here _________________ '87 Westy 'Flossie','86 Westy 'R1','86 tintop GL - Subi2.2 'J2','83.5 stock tintop L 'ZoomBus','74 Karmann Ghia, '63 Notch |
