doubledoor buses (other than panels) are fairly uncommon. I don't know of any bullet doubledoor walkthrough kombis or standards, but I have seen a '58 23-window doubledoor walkthrough bus (it was a VW factory hackjob though). I have seen a factory picture of another bullet doubledoor walkthrough deluxe sunroof. there is also a '66 double slider 21 walkthrough. _________________ .

was that the bus from fresno? I seriously suspect that the bus was a '58 panel. I never saw any evidence that it was a kombi or a '57.
I have never heard of any '57 doubledoor kombis. I have also never been able to verify any '56 or '57 walkthrough buses as existing (any model). the option was theoretically available in those years. _________________ .

yeah i have seen pictures of the double door walkthrough factory hack with the 2/3 middle seat mounted in the center...very incredible. Do you know if this bus still exists and is being cared for?
good point about the 57 DD WT kombi, it might have been a panel, but for some reason i think i saw a picture of it sitting in a bunch of tall grass and it has 11 windows.
*note, the vin on the kombi we are talking about, turns out to be a very early 58 build bus. so i take the '57 year back.
good point about the lack of 56 or 57 walkthroughs! _________________ drive your split. |

I saw the bus about five years ago and it was just sitting inside in a collection at that time.

the cargo doors, the walkthrough section and the middle seat mounts were all hacked in at the factory in wolfsburg. I have a photocopy of the letter from the factory talking about the modifications that were done to the bus. it is a seriously cool top level bus. _________________ .

damn thats nuts.
so is it really a hack? or a special order? I mean if the factory did it, wouldnt it just be considered a special order? _________________ drive your split. |

the bus was delivered in 1958 as a nine seater five door model. it was bought by the model airplane club in Wolfsburg, Germany. they took it to their local VW factory in '59 and had the walkthrough, the double doors and the 2/3 middle seat retro-fitted to the bus. _________________ .

X2! Said it before and say it again, a hack is a hack is a hack!
Some are done nicely, some are ruined terribly, some are done by the factory as the "plattenwagen" was, which gave the idea for the bus itself. For that matter ALL Binz' are hacks! _________________ Some people are so busy being clever they don't have time enough to be wise. |

I have two May 1958 walk-thru buses: one is a panel (camper) and the other one is a kombi. I know that the panel is somewhat rare; is the kombi much rarer? _________________ Don't worry; be happy. (Baba) |

Not only is Campys bus the only known '58 walkthrough kombi, it's also 4-wheel drive. RARE! |
