Hi.. New to the forum and KG cars..I currently drive a 07 Passat Wagen I rebuilt last fall and love it .Since finishing the Passat I have been researching the KG and want one and the wife is on board I think ..
I found a 72 hardtop that someone has tried to restore in the past .The car looks good .Leather interior is good ,The roof liner and dash are tired .The door cards are tired also .The body has been painted ,I am guessing 10 years ago .I am noticing small bubbles under the paint on the nose and the rockers .There is a rust hole behind the driver door on the rocker ,size of a tennis ball .Some rust is showing around the gas cap door .
Under the front hood on driver side they used fiber glass to repair some rust holes .I don't know what the part is called ,I am thinking inner fender The nose inside is great and also inside the trunk space looks good .
Engine compartment is solid ,No patches .The car looks straight I can't see cheese bumps in the doors or fenders ..
Now the thing that bothers me is the floor pans...They cut out the old and replaced with aftermarket fiberglass pans ..Is this an alternative to metal?
This is the debate I am having with myself .Do I buy this car after someone has doctored it up .Or hold off and find one that is original ..
I am going back tomorrow to here it run .The battery was dead ..It is in a garage against a wall on the driver side .It has been there for awhile ..

Your input would be Great...

How much do they want for it? How much are you willing to spend to fix it up?
Add that up and see if you could find one already restored for that.

When you go back take a digital camera and post up some pictures here

and you ought to get some un-biased opinions.

No one is really crazy about fiberglass. Do it once, and use metal. But pictures would be helpful.

My opinion would be to find one with an original body....its cheaper in the long run. Unless you have the time, tools and inclination to do rust repairs yourself. The problem with a "doctored up" car is that it is very difficult to find all the places where it has been doctored because they could have been covered up with shiny paint.

She's in Canada. Cars aren't exactly solid up there. There's typical surface rust in the truck, but as expected, the rockers are crusty and there was mention of fiberglass floorpans.

For those who say the car can't be saved, I shall kindly point you to some nut in this forum named Grelland and his Ghia build.

Personally I'd walk away. I wouldn't be willing to take on that much work! Unless you're planning on doing a labour of love on it! Very Happy

Did you notice the machine screws holding up the fiberglass pans ?
Also the driver seat is bolted through the fiberglass also .Are the seats usually bolted to the floor ?

Agreed it can be saved, but how much money/time/experience do you have?

After seeing cars brought back literally from the swamp, anything can be

saved. One such example

http://www.impalas.net/forums/showthread.php?t=686

and of course grelland's

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=263825&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0

Read those threads then come back and let us know if you can handle

repairs like that. There is some real dedication/skills in those builds

Whatever you decide post back and let us know what you end up doing. Cool

I would say $500 is a fair price for that car. Clkwrk and I are both also in Ontario. don't think I know that car, but it looks about right for the location.

You could save it, or you could spend a little more and have something more solid shipped to you.

I've tried to fix VWs that were that bad myself. You'll lose money, or interest or both long before you fix that mess.
