just installed 1600 long block in my daughters 71 sb autostick. already did alternator upgrade and last attempt to keep old engine saw me install an empi 34-3 carb. it still has the factory dvda dizzy. i have a small hesitation at take off. not really anything to get upset over but since i have so much already into it...will an SVDA work for us in an autostick application? i have read all the posts i can find but no one really addresses the autostick specifically. this things gotta be turnkey for her since she's off to college and i'll only be able to maintain it on weekends. |

i guess if i'm going to ask a technical question i should have the numbers ready. i time it statically. the dwell is 50 on the nose. i have gone through the bentley procedure for adjusting the carb. and she idles right at 825-840. i'll check my part #'s on the dizzy and can only assume the parts house i hang out at which does alot of vw is giving me the proper cap rotor points condensor etc. i guess i won't know for sure until i know for sure. i gave up my timing light many moons ago. i guess for checking advance i'll have to re-invest in one. |

twobozo,
PM Bookwus, He runs a '70 A-S with a 1600 DP & SVDA. Re that EMPI 34-3. Did it come with the vac takeoff point for the A-S CV or did you drill/fab? Also with the A-S, you may find increasing your idle speed within limits may eliminate the slight stumble. I found mine likes about closer to 900rpm @ idle. Last thoughts, have you checked jet sizes and acc pump settings?
Here's what should have been factory fitting :

dizzy # 113 095 205AH. empi carb not ported for 3 vac lines. scavenged for a-s control valve with a tee from advance vac line. in retrospect this may not have been the greatest idea. i think it's stealing just enough vac to cause this ever so slight hesitation. is drilling a port rocket science? i have the original carb. will it serve as a template? i think dizzy is in good shape. timing light this weekend to confirm numbers on that. inductive light w/ adjustable settings ok or do i have to find a degree wheel or timing arc whoozy? |

Towbozo,
Not rocket science. It's covered in vwar.org . First post by "Eddie" in the tech section. Mike (Bookwus) "imperialised" the drill sizes. Steady hand and care is all that is required as well as a suitable spigot. Tee-ing off the vac advance screws up the action/timing of the CV. Adjustable (dial back) will be fine. If your pulley is stock '71, it's notch is @ 5 ATDC.

thanks to all who contributed. you guys saved me from the unnecessary purchase of a distributor and i also didn't have to try to drill my carb. got my hands on a nice timing light and found i was out by about 12 degrees. i was able to dial her in and check the dizzy performance. all within specs as provided for a 205AH. thank you very much guys.---jes |
