|

Some will rejoice that I am finally taking the "70s college porch couch" fabric out of my '50 11G. I was surprised to find a wooden strip inside the lower seatback to which the fabric was stapled. I don't recall finding this on my '57 when I redid one seat back. I do recall the tube running across with the slit along its length.
Is this original?
I can't imagine someone pressing a wooden strip in there.
Interesting taking that old upholstery off. It was done in Sweden, and as I have always said, it was done very well. The original horsehair pads are there, but bolstered a bit with some foam and jute-type padding. Burlap bags over the springs, and all stitched together with some sturdy twine. LOTS of it...
I have a West Coast Classics interior in the basement that I will be putting in the car.
Anyone seen that wood in a split seat before???

John,
I have never seen any wood inside a vw seat at least from 46 to 85.
That wood strip looks added to me.
Cat wait to see your new interior |

| There should be a piece of cardboard knitted to fabric. That cardboard is pushed inside the pipe chink. Then pipe is prised so that fabric with cardboard is kept tight. I try ti find some pictures. |

I dont remember finding any wood before either. But I can see that it was quite a logical idea for the person retrimming the seats at the time, especially as that lower rear bar is always weak if not torn away at the ends, have rewelded a couple there before.
I have never seen those West Coast interiors before in a car, do they use himmelservice fabric?
Are you going brown wool stripe or beige cotton rib? (rib rib rib)
There is something strangely appealing to me about old re-trims in crazy old fabric from the period My 50 drivers seat has an old dealer supplied cover on it, torn up and smelly/ looks quite out of place on its own, but I love it to bits |

Yeah, that is what I remember from my '57. I'm not surprised at this. This car has been full of "interesting re-engineering" since I got it. _________________ John Henry

John,
Just like the interior that came in your car, that piece of wood is CUSTOM . I'll miss that interior.
Lenny's stuff has the strip of cardboard, but you may still have to make some adjustments to get it to fit properly.

You'll miss busting my balls about it Dave, that is what you will "miss". Still have screws in your SHO sem arms?
Maybe I'll put the whole used set in the Classifieds, "CUSTOM" split interior. @@ RARE! @@ _________________ John Henry

John, please post a picture of that old seat fabric being dropped into the garbage so we can all rest easy knowing it will be in a landfill.

Truth is, it will probably be burned when I do my annual spring brush burning. I'll post a pic................!
WHile on this subject, can anyone recommend and upholstery glue that does not bleed through the fabric? I've found a few from trim suppliers on-line that sell some, but I was wondering if anyone had firsthand experience with something that worked well.
I know that ideally you don't apply glue to the back of "seen" fabric, but inevitably there are places that you have to.... _________________ John Henry

We swear by an auto carpet glue from our Wurth man that is fabulous, it has the viscosity of vaseline so it does'nt drip or soak in at all but grabs fast like crazy. It comes in a stubby short can with a brush in the lid, I think its sold as rubber glue maybe. Anyway great for attaching rubbers & carpet. I just wish they would sell it in bigger cans!
Dont burn that lovely 70's history! Get a nice pair of scatter cushions made up from them to go on your sofa and save them for your wife as a great Christmas gift? |

You know I was actually thinking of that. At a minimum, I will line one of the tattered glove boxes with it............ _________________ John Henry
