|
|
I'm helping a friend rebuild the motor in his '86. New heads, pistons and cylinders, bearings, pumps etc. I myself have never stayed with a stock cam or valvetrain and we are looking for opinions on whether or not this cam is worth putting back in. The hydraulic lifters look absolutely great. The goal is to not cut corners but still save pennies.
Next question would be- If we need a new cam, new lifters or regrind the ones we've got? If new how is the pushrod wear dealt with, by swapping new ends in on that side, or just ignored? Thanks. |

| As an opinion your cam wear looks pretty minimal to me. Visually you have about the same amount of chamfer at the top of the lope as along the sides so there has not been much lost of lift. |

That one looks good to reuse, so long as all the lobes are as smooth and non-pitted as the one you show, and that (very important) you kept the lifters indexed to their cam positions. If you mixed them up, it's back to square one.
If you go with a new cam, it's fine to have the lifters reground by a competent machinist, provided they were working well before. After regrinding, you need to disassemble each one and clean the insides thoroughly. Do not mix up any parts between lifters (allright, the circlips can be mixed up, but not the internals). Clean them in solvent, blow out with brakleen or carb cleaner, then prefill them with motor oil. Push the piston back into the body while depressing the ball-valve with a scribe. Then put on the lifter cup and other parts, and if possible put them back into the case bores that each one came from (once again, I hope you indexed their positions when you removed them).
If the lifters weren't performing well before, they might be helped by the manual cleaning, but rather than take that chance, myself, I would lay out the $100 for a new set. _________________ Shop for unique and useful Vanagon accessories at the Vanistan shop:

| Good news all around then. The entire valvetrain has been indexed, so no worries there. Thanks. |
