|
|
Hi all.
Finally got it to run. Short story why it wouldn't start:
Cracks in wires on engine portion of harness,
28 pin connector from engine harness to ECU Portion of harness needed cleaning.
Knock sensor plug plugged into the MAF on air cleaner!
RPM sensor had incorrect plug plugged into it.
Possibly a few other details I can't recall right now.
Short 1.5 MB vid:

It's not totally right yet, but a big hurdle has been passed.
THANKS A LOT FOR THE HELP!

Yah some pretty awesome production values on that video, but I think the assistant director missed that little flaw.
When it's actually on the road I'll have the "directors cut" video released.
Thanks,

Nice job. I have an ABA 2.0 in my westy also. You will love it! I put over 12,000 miles on mine within 6 months with no major issues. I just picked up a wrecked 98 jetta TDI this week so it may be coming out soon. Good work! |

Thanks Outwesty. Appreciate that!
Still lots to do, and I hope the exhaust I'm making doesn't suffer too much cracking. Likely I'll be installing a flex bellows.
How has your exhaust faired? Any cracking?
Is your ABA a 50* with the 1.8 head?
I did mine at 15*. Some virtues, but I think more work than 50*.
I'm now adapting Jetta cooling system to the Vanagon. Little things like finding out that the coolant housing at rear of head, can be swapped for a "manual transmission" type. Less outlets on it.
My engine came from an automatic jetta.
A question if you don't mind.
I used the KEP "Vanagon" flywheel. On the Jetta, there was a shim between the flex plate and crank end. I kept that on the Jetta engine.
But....
There was a thinner shim between the heads of the bolts holding the flex plate on, and the flex plate itself.
I didn't transfer this shim to the Vanagon, as the stock Vanagon FW doesn't have that. Also, there appears to be a version of clutch for Jetta/Golf that is almost identical to the Vanagon.
I doubt it's needed, but IF your donor was an automatic, did you install the thin shim between FW bolt heads and FW?
Thanks for any direction on that matter.
