Bought 8 new genuine porche rod nuts. They were sent from Porche Germany to my retailer... I noticed some of them had surface rust on threads.
Is this cause for concern or not? _________________ 79 Baywindow, currently rebuilding engine

Run an oiled tap through them. _________________ Wash your hands

run an oiled bolt thru them. A tap will remove metal. When you torque them make sure they feel normal. Or ask the seller to find some that aren't rusted.

you can also run a spiral wire brush in them to knock the rust off.

go to your gun cleaning kits and there you will find bore brushes about the same size as the threads. The only one you can't use are spiral wound stainless brushes like for a 12 ga. Most of the brass and stainless bore brushes have bristles that will work.

I would be a bit peeved to pay for a expensive Porsche part that hadn't been stored well. A tap shouldn't be taking any metal at all, oiled up it should turn through the nuts with little force. You could also oil them up and just run them onto an old bolt a few times.

Yes Iโm considering returning them... but then it will be a week before next shipment... but thats ok, my rods will not be back from the mashinist anyway.
Thanks for you answers guys
And to abscate... if I decide Iโm going for that rod-nut-Rat-look, then genuine porche rust cant be beat. VW rust just looks so cheap in comparison. And even though no one can actually see my rod nuts, I can still brag about the rust on them being genuine porche rod nut rust. _________________ 79 Baywindow, currently rebuilding engine

Some rod nuts are tweaked slightly to make them friction fit on to the threads, a tap may round them back out.
I'd try some of the milder internet tricks for rust removal, like soaking them in Coca cola, molasses or vinegar first, it doesn't look like it'll take much to get it off, but any debris in the threads may skew torque wrench readings. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Run a wire brush thrugh them, a drop of oil or a drop of locker and use them, they will spend the rest of their life in oil, slim chance they will ever rust out.

do not tap. Tap removes metal. You can chase them or replace them. _________________ George Carlin:

There are cheap kits of Dremel-type attachments that would have small metal brushes you could use with a drill. Iโve used them for cleaning rusty nuts and they worked great. I paid a few bucks at either Harbor Freight or Home Depot. _________________ - 1977 CEI Sunroof Bus 2.0L F.I. Hydraulic Lifters
