The factory inspection code, should stay in place. If you just rinse the fender wells with water.
Use a solvent or soapy spray cleaner, and it will take off the hand written code. |
I am amazed that it is still there after 58 years and 135K miles. |

I figured out a non-invasive way to mount these little European Tourist badges that I got from a gentleman in Budapest, Hungary. Mounted them to a cardboard visor sleeve.

Nice idea. Those are souvenir badges for your wooden walking cane or hiking stick. They are made of thin tin or aluminum/etc and bend easily to conform to the curvature of the cane. Attach to the cane with very small nails/brads. You can still find similar badges in local area souvenir stores nowadays.
25 yrs ago I bought a number of larger enameled tourist badges from cities or areas in Germany. They were from a small shop in the German town Garmisch-Partenkirchen. I mounted them to the exposed metal windshield header on the passenger side using double-stick tape. The Beetle I had at the time did not have a passenger sun visor so that the badges were in direct sight. My only tie to those badges was that I had been to those towns while working in Germany in the early 1980's. My Beetle was never there... |

Thanks for explaining the intended use for these badges, Rome. The ones that I have are from Switzerland, Heidelberg, and Innsbruck. The car is Tourist Delivery that was owned by the wife of a U.S Army officer. I know that she crossed the Alps in the car and they were stationed in Heidelberg. I can't prove that she went to Innsbruck, but it is logical (and the badge is pretty). |

This has been on my mind since I started this project but finally got the HC in. Next place the body back on the pan and check for overall fit and alignment

I added an sPod and USB charger/volt meter. It had just a piece of plastic over the radio hole in the dash before. I added a blank so I wouldn't chop up the dash any more. What can I say, I love the look of driving lights on a beetle, so I wanted a clean way to wire them. The sPod should be a neat way to do that. In theory.
And then I took it for a ride. Still need to hook up the front driving lights, but I need to paint the front bumper first.
And just a pic, cause I think it turned out cool.

My stock VDO gauge was leaking at the boot. This Wolfsburg West replacement seems really nice.

I replaced the gas cap gasket after ordering one at 70mm for my 67 which turned out to be too large.
Turns out I have a bus gas cap that fits on my beetle, 60mm gasket! Fits perfectly! |

In addition to the usual monthly battery charge and tire pressure adjustments, I did a clutch cable adjustment today. Not so mysteriously, the clutch chatter from a stop is gone. _________________ “If you care for a thing long enough, it takes on a life of its own, doesn't it? Today I replaced both axle boots with new, German made boots. Less than two years ago I replaced one axle boot with a Chinese made boot, and then about a year later I replaced the other one with another Chinese made one. Both began cracking and leaking within a year and two years respectively
Hopefully the German made boots will last a bit longer! They fit better(the Chinese ones were slightly small around the transmission end of the boot), but are made of thinner rubber... the ad says they are crack resistant though, so who knows! |

I had a noise in my steering wheel, took it off and found one of the three bolts holding the aftermarket wheel on had come loose.
And this, well this was just bugging me. Where the speaker was there was duct tape holding on foam from the PO. So I cut some plexi to cover it up instead.
And I took it for a cruise

I installed some Hella ValueFit LEDs on a bar I had the local boat shop make. They are really bright, I have them on my Vanagon, but woah, for the price I like them.
Everything on the install went so well, during the test drive around the neighborhood the shifter broke. This is my fault, I kept fidgeting with the knob because it wasn't lining up right.Lesson learned. I had a spare, but now I kind of want a bug-tech one.

On a 250 mile cruise last weekend I got annoyed with a slight "twitch" of the steering when crossing bumps in the highway. I figured it was time to replace
the steering damper, so I did that today and it drives great. I was quite proud of myself for finding a "SACHS" damper on line, instead of the more common COFAP unit.
Upon receiving the part yesterday, I was quite excited, but then I saw it-----
on a label on the SACHS box were the words in little, tiny letters, "made in China". No such information on the part itself.
But it works just fine. |

New tires!
The JG 67 was needing new tires. The old ones were well over 20yo and hard as rocks.
I ordered a set of Michelin XZX 165 SP 15 from Jegs.
Had um mounted and balanced yesterday.
Of course, the tire shop over filled the tire pressure to 42psi
The car was squirrely driving home from the shop.
I lowered the tire pressures to 19 front and 26 rear. The car drove sooo much better after lowering the pressure.
Next up? An alternator change. _________________ I have learned over the years.

And while the JG was getting new shoes at the tire shop.
I finished the installation of the 2276 in the ZenithBlau 67.
After all the work, I climbed into the cabin and turned the key to build oil pressure.
And Nothing! The starter would not spin.
It's a new INI high torque starter and I may have not connected the starter trigger wire correctly. _________________ I have learned over the years.
