Same rear window size up to '71, though a '69 or '70 standard Beetle had defroster wires, as did a '71 Super Beetle. '71 standard Beetles did not have the rear defroster wires. Rear window size was enlarged 12% for '72. |

I covered the wires in my engine area with braided loom. It looks nice and with it being open, I hope makes it a bit more durable.
Apropos of nothing, here are two pups in the van I sold the Vanagon for.

Thanks, I measured my '71 Super and it did look the same. The guy has it advertised as 67-71 with defrosters. I noticed today my '66 didn't appear to, but there was not much left. Hoping that was the only difference. We will see. _________________ 1971 Super Beetle. Owned 25 years... And now the owner of a 1966 Beetle. Plus, a 1967 bus that doesn't run. |

I got a new 1966 Beetle with no breaks, towed and in my yard.
I Sat in it pumping the breaks for a little, letting the pressure build up and then immediately dropping, while trying to find a leak. No luck yet. Will try again tomorrow.
Otherwise, looking for a new rear window and trying to figure out if a '66 and '67 is the same.
Planning on getting new running boards, and rubber for the windows.
Full tune up this week. But for a car that had been sitting for a long time it runs and sounds good.

Change the rubber bits underneath the car. Brake lines, fuel lines and the like. Make it safe, before making it go!
Typically the metal rear brake line is corroded just behind the drivers side seat. Check it. It's inside the car along the tunnel under the floor mat.
Congrats on your new to you purchase. Have fun with it. |
Thanks for the reply.
I got the car on stands and noticed this today. Came in and checked some posts here and saw this leaking grommet is not too out of the ordinary. Will just order a few of them, cross my fingers.
What is happening is the brakes go to the floor when I get in the car, then after maybe 10 pumps the brakes start working. Then immediately upon releasing the break it has to be pumped again.
Is that what happens when a master cylinder leaks? I mean I think from what I have read it is. It is just that a lot of times when something gets fixed, it turns out to be an unrelated problem. So, I thought I would ask. Will keep reading around. There was a lot of post for later years about the subject.
The MC and 4 slave cylinders were replaced by my friend who I got it from.

More little projects this week.
I got the rear scoop repainted. The paint was falling off in chunks.
I fixed a loose turn signal lever. The little plate had loosened up.
I wisely marked the wheel to make putting it on straight easy.
And I got rid of the security lug nuts. I really only park this at home.

Fixed a nasty pushrod tube oil leak on my 2276.
The screwdriver is pointing to the offending tube seal.
I was dreading having to remove the engine to fix the leak.
I talked with a VW restorer last weekend and he said to try grabbing the tube with a pair of channel lock pliars wrapped with a shop rag. I did just that while pulling the tube toward the head and wiggling the tube to get the seal seated better.
It worked! It took all of 5 minutes to fix. No more nasty oil leak. _________________ I have learned over the years.

Installed a brake pedal switch to trigger the brake lights sooner than the "better-late-than-never" switch in the master cylinder. Since I am using this with 6v system ('63 Bug), I decided to use a relay so the supplied 18 gauge wire and switch wouldn't need to do the heavy lifting job of delivering current to the lights. I also left extra wire bundled behind a bracket that I added under the forward mounting bolt on the pedal assembly. It's much easier to do any future wiring work if it can be pulled out a couple of feet.
Seemed like a worthwhile safety modification. I will be adding a third brake light in the rear window later.
Every second counts in this age of distracted drivers.

I got in a package from Jason at Air Cooled Vintage Works. First part was to replace my air filter with this aluminum shrouded one. My old one was filling with dirt really quickly. Plus this model is on all the old buggy pics from Moab past.
And one from last night, pre swap.
Some new race trim valve covers for another day this week.

I installed a set of Race Trim valve covers. The 100* summer days are coming, I thought maybe the thicker aluminum would be better at heat dissipation. Also they look super cool.

Today I installed a new AAC grab handle and a new set,of Bosch plugs.
Bit of a bummer the new handle was scratched, but whatever.
This Hazet spark plug socket is nice!

I put in the Torque Resto fuse block.
Then I went to just put in the "right" bolts on the wire covers, and sometime in the last 55 years someone used the wrong bolts and mangled the threads. Luckily that was an easy fix.
Then I went to put on a set of EMPI headlight covers, and one was fine, the other was so shrink wrapped that after 30 minutes of toil I gave up. I called JBugs, and they sent out a new pair. So that is cool.

Swapped out coil's today. I went with the Beru from Germany, and it not being blue is killing me.
Then a fun spin.
