Everytime I turn the key all I see is the red light hardly any green, I replaced the bulb and its still to dim.
Is there another bulb i can use to make it brighter.

Hi,
Get yourself a voltage meter at any hardware
store ($10) and check what kind of voltage is getting to your bulb.Sometimes these old wires fail inside and only partial juice makes it thru.I'd replace the wire from my
fuse box to the bulb being mindful to find
the same color wire as it's smart to keep
actual wiring matching original wiring diagrams. Your bug would have originally been a 6 volt system, so make sure your green
bulb is a 12v bulb as somebody might have sold you a 6v bulb if they didn't know it was converted to a 12v system.
Good Luck, Greg

Thanks Greg, is there a way to see if the bulb is a 6v?

Hi amaze the voltage is stamped on the metal caseing of the lamp/bulb. Try checking the connection at the oil pressure switch 1st. why VW used green for oil problems is beyond me. red means STOP! all over the world. But in v-dub green means pull over! grounding is the most commen problem in vw as you know make sure the lamp is fitting up correctly in the speedo socket. A meter is the only way to find out if you have (resistance) or bad wire (not uncommen) but esay to check.
not much help but E-mail me I can walk you thru it. Bill
