A while back I posted about my 17 year daughter who is building a motor for our "FAMILY PROJECT". A 1970 bug.
She is doing this as her Senior Project for high school.
The motor that came with the car was a 1967 H case that was in pieces, but rebuildable. After asking questions on this site, I decided that the best plan of attack was to use a newer case, so I had a friend (a local bug guru), assemble a bare bones case for her to start with. I need to make sure we end up with a reliable motor, because my 13 year old daughter has decided that this "family project" will be here first driver.
She has done EVERYTHING except the muscle work. I just check up on her between each stage.
Needless to say, I am extreemly proud of her, and have posted some pics. Maybe your comments can make her grins even bigger!

I am impressed.
I know when I was that age, I helped my old man rebuild the engine in our '69 bug which he bought new for $1995. It, of course, sucked up a burnt #3 cyl. exhaust valve. This was 1975, my senior year, and I am ashamed to say I didn't help out as much as I could have. Well, that bug became my first car in '79, and I transplanted that same engine into a '70 karmann ghia body in '81, as the beetle body was shot. New Jersey road salt. Building that engine together was one of the best things my father and I ever did. I only hope my 10 year old daughter and I can do likewise in the future.

Best of luck with the rebuild.

By the way, why does the 13 year old get the car? Seems like she who does the work should reap the rewards. Of course, if the 13 year old can MIG weld.....

Well, my 17 year old is driving a nice shiney 2002 Huyandi. We got it for her because she will be leaving for college soon, and I don't want to have to worry about her transportation. 10 year 100,000 mile waranty is prety tough to beat.

Actually, I wish I could work on the motor, but she will not let me. She has to do the entire thing for the grade. I am just making sure it is correct. I had to sneek out to the garage today and check the torque on the heads. She had em dead on! Glad I didn't get caught.
Today she discovered that the rocker assemblies from the old 67 are shot. Real bad gauling on the rockers. The shafts look ok though. We get to go on a shopping spree tomorrow.

When I was in high school, we had a project that was funded by the state and GE to create an Electric car.

Someone donated a late model bug (68 - 70) that we turned into a hybrid car. It was something to remember. I wish I had some pictures of it.
