I got a pack of trading cards from vwoa for filling out a survey on their website a few years ago. They are cards of the best vw commercials from the 90's.
Just wondering if anyone else filled out the survey or got the cards. |

| No, but I wouldn't mind a deck with their best ads from the '60s. Bill Bernbach and the others at Doyle Dane Bernbach did some wonderful stuff to put the Beetle on the map and in the minds of America. As George Lois put it in his book, VWs marketing dilemma was simple and almost insurmountabe: How to sell a Nazi car in a Jewish town? |

| What book is that? Is that the book on DDB ads? There is a book I have that was done, apparently, for DDB and that showcases a whole bunch of DDB print and TV ads of the 60's and 70's, as well as a couple for the New Beetle. If you're interested I'll get you the name of the book. |

79SUPERVERT-
I've seen the book you're talking about, but it's not the one with the VW "trip to the factory" story in it. I finally found it in my library. It's called WHAT'S THE BIG IDEA? HOW TO WIN WITH OUTRAGEOUS IDEAS (THAT SELL). Written by George Lois and some other dude. Read it when I was a studly young agency copywriter many moons ago.
The book is out of print, but I did a search on amazon.com and they have some used paperbacks. The book is an "Ode to George", but he does have an entire chapter on his involvement in the Beetle campaign.
***WARNING-EXTRA INFO! ADDED ONLY BECAUSE THE FORUMS ARE SLOW TODAY! READ ONLY IF EXTREMELY BORED! DO NOT OPERATE HEAVY MACHINERY AFTER READING THE REST OF THIS POST! THE MANAGEMENT IS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ARTICLES LEFT IN CLOTHING! DO NOT TAUNT HAPPY FUN BALL!***
Lois worked as a writer on the original "Think Small" campaign and was a real pioneer in the industry. He helped Bill Bernbach usher in the "creative revolution" of the 60s that paired up art directors (most of them were 7th Ave out of work clothing industry illustrators) with writers who focused on finding the uniqueness of the product itself, rather than create an "atmosphere" and slap a picture of the product on it--thus the concept of the VW BEETLE simply and cleanly presented as the hero of the ads. A concept developed almost 40 years agot that is still seen today...blah blah blah; yadda, yadda, yadda.
PTSINCLAIR is a design guru and probably knows what I'm droning on about. |
