I’m a knucklehead - while trouble shooting the intermittent tach on my 87 Westy the cluster slipped and I damaged the temp gauge. Just bumped the needle but now the needle drags on the gauge face and doesn’t move. Two steps forward, one step back - tach works great now but the previously perfect temp gauge is now inop 🤦♂️
I called around a bit looking for a replacement gauge, no luck so far. Anyone have one they’d part with or know of a shop that can diagnose and repair it? |

| If you inspect the gauge carefully you will see that the needle floats on two "posts". One mounting point is fixed and the other bends from the heating coil. The needle fits onto the two parts with a U shaped wire. You can remove the needle and straighten it. And then put it back on. I know because I have done it. The one that I fixed is working fine now, someone had bent the needle previously. |

If it's still hooked on properly you might be able toslip a flat feeler gauge or something under the needle to gently lift and straighten it so it doesn't drag on the gauge face. |

Thanks - I used a magnifying glass and looked it over closely. Didn’t try to disassemble it yet but I see the wire posts you’re talking about. I wasn’t sure if I bent the needle or the wires that the needle moves on. I’ll pull it apart again and see if I can remove the needle. I’ll feel better about attempting that if I’ve got a spare gauge though |

Here are a couple of pics I used to get the needles back on my spare gauges.
