I've noticed a new clicking sound on the right side of the engine (#1 and #2 cylinders). Hard to describe. Seems to sound even more like a sewing machine than usual...if that makes sense. I adjusted the valves about a month and a half ago. Any guesses? 1600 Dual Port.

Sounds like you have that prototype engine Vw put out in the 70's Wink
Check for any cracks or hole or leaks in your valve cover. HAd that happen to me once before.

Check the valve adjustment again, just in case. Also check for excessive side to side movement of the rocker arms on the rocker shaft.

^ Yeah, I think that's what I'm gonna do. It just started about two days ago. I'm wondering if i didn't tighten something back up sufficiently. You can hear it really well while motor is cold (just started). seems to go away, some, as it warms up...not completely.

It's not a matter of time, but a matter of miles. They should be adjusted every six thousand miles.... or sooner.

I once had the top part of the valve cover gasket slip down leaving an opening which made the valves sound louder.

heard something similar and yes it was valves , just adjusted them too did a recheck after running it a few times and yes they were mis adjusted took another time of running it and readjusting until the setting held , weather its im not tightening them down enough or its heat cycling or the parts are worn.

I drive it about to work about 3 days / week so I don't think it's the amount of miles but it has been friggin' HOT down here! Gonna check it all this weekend. Thanks for the info. I'll update y'all on my findings.

Most common here is brokin wavvy washer on the rocker shaft or look inside Valve spring for a raised up Valve guide .
Look for Rocker contact spots on top of Valve spring's and keeper's also .
Badd Valve geometry is the usual culprit for rocker contacting the Spring / Keepers / or breaking a wavvy washer .
Feel the valve cover while engine is running and pin point exactly wich valve it is that's tacking .
.006 on Aluminum push rod motor's and 0 Lash on Chromoly Push rod motor's .
Post again and I will describe proper Valve geometry 101 and 102 .
Post again if you find brokin wavvy washer on the Rocker arm shaft .

I had a bit of a tick on one of my cylinders but I was in denial... after all, if you've just checked the valve clearance, it can't be valve clearance, right? WRONG.
Found out it was a worn adjustment screw...
Although it would read correct clearance, the screw was worn and dished out a wee bit so the true clearance was greater that what I was measuring.
When measuring, I was getting a clearance reading from the tip of the worn screw to the top of the pushrod. The pushrod was actually riding in the "valley" of the worn out adjustment screw. When adjusted for the high part, the actual clearance was therefore too great, causing the ticking.
Screw your adjustment screws and look at the tips. They should actually be slightly concave. Replace as necessary.
