|

I have an 80 westfalia with a few problems. It would idle, But when
you put it in drive it would die. I have cleaned out the carb and put
on new intake gaskets. I could push the gas all the way to the floor
and it would sound like it was only putting out about half power. Then
it would seem to take off to full power, But if I took my foot off the
gas it would just die. Now I can't get it to fire off at all.
Thanks |

Carb?
Those weber progressive carbs just invite vacuum leak everywhere. |

Your vanagon had fuel injection when it left the factory so somebody has replaced that with a carb/s. It's almost impossible to troubleshoot your problem without being there. Sorry I'm not much help. Pictures wouldn't hurt. |

I will try to get a few pics on here so you can see what I am dealing with. The guy I got it from had a shop do that. The mech. that did the work told him it would be cheaper to put on the carb insted of fixing what was there. I dont think I would have gone this rout, But know that it here I will try to make it do for a while.
Thanks |

Easier for the machanic more like it, with gas prices what they are it'll just cost you more in the long run in lost mpg.
If it has been sitting for eight months it could be anything, or a couple things, not just the carb.
It is more then likey a Weber progressive carb like Randy said.
New Webers are not that bad, but as they age they can start to suck.
I haven't messed with one in years, but I found that people tend to "adjust" the settings on them without knowing what they are doing and throw them really out of whack.
Find out what model you have and set the set screws, and choke to the start settings.
There are Weber manuals online for doing this, Google Weber.
Make sure you are using the correct jets.
Make sure you aren't using the stock FI fuel pump. |
