Where I work is less than a mile from the freeway. It's no problem to get in your Bus that's been parked all day and go onto the freeway and drive at 60mph, right? |

You ought to let it warm up for a bit when you start it. In the Muir book, he mentions starting his vw, rolling a cigarette, then he figured in the time it took to do that (2 min tops?) he'd be good to go. The main thing would be to give the engine enough time without a load on it to get some oil splashed around between the parts. Jeremy |

I used to be a big proponent of the 2 minute warm up, but I just don't think it's smart. I'll warm up about 30 seconds or so and go,taking it easy until it's warm. If you sit there warming it up all the time, your washing your cylinder walls down. Let the choke do it's thing. |

I always let my 70 bug warm up for atleast 2 minutes or more, if not it likes to hesitate, but once it warms up, look out. |

I haven't had any trouble doing this. My work is 1-2 miles from the freeway, I pull the choke and let it warm up for 30 seconds or so and then go.
I usually have the manual choke all the way in by the time I get to the freeway on ramp, sooner if it's warm out. |

the ownwers manuals say to NOT let it warm up. they recomend you drive off immediatley (at least for my '73 bus). also, remember muir suggested to tie the chokes open. starting to realize that book is great if you are stranded in a strange city and need to get home. and thats about it. However, it was a good excuse to have a relaxing smoke while listening to the purr of the engine.

It only take about a minute for the choke to open. Then you won't wash the cylinders. Don't be in such a hurry. Maybe try listen to Pink Floyd while you wait? |

I say get it warm before tromping on it to enter the freeway. A mile or so should easily do it, but much less, and you should probably let it idle before leaving. |

when the choke is in the closed or "cold" position it lets less air mix with the incoming fuel. The fuel rich mixture helps the car start and idle when cold. As the car warms up, an electric choke (or butterfly as some refer to it) will slowly open as the engine warms up allowing more air to mix with the fuel. If a choke is stuck in the closed position or the driver forgets to manually open the choke on some cars, too much fuel will continue to burn causing an overly rich mixture to start washing the cylinder walls clean of the oil. As you know, this is needed to protect the piston rings from scuffing and scoring the cylinder walls. |
