Hi everyone.....

I have a 1971 Super Beetle convertible with autostick transmission that I spent the last three years restoring, the last six months of which I have been trying to get it to shift. I am in the Cleveland, Ohio area and I am wondering if anyone knows of a good service garage that can service Autosticks. I have checked everything 10 times over and had the transmission professionally rebuilt but I am to the point where I don't know what to do next. Replacing it with a standard shift is not an option as the car is my wife's and she won't learn to drive a stick. If anyone knows of someone who can service it for me I would greatly appreciate the help. Thanks in advance for your time!!!

Hiya 71,

I know that you have been trying to get your AutoStick in functional shape for some time. Your problem almost certainly lies either in the vacuum or electrical system.

I don't know of any VW shops in the Cleveland area but I'm sure somebody will chime in with a suggestion or two. When you do connect be sure to ask the techs if they can handle this sort of job. There seem to be quite a few VW/AC oriented repair shops, but those that can handle AS repair are few and far in between.

Russ,
This'll give you the background.

http://www.vwar.org/forum/index.php?topic=354.0

What happened with Green's suggestions? I had an odd idea of rigging up a test light and splicing it into the gearstick wire. Every time you shifted the light would go on, and if you lost power somewhere, you'd know it.
You'd at least be able to eliminate that circuit (or pinpoint in the worst case).
