hello, ive been doing such a lot of reading since i found this great site, ive noticed lots of differences in what you do to your vans & the stuff we do to ours, most noticeable is the way you all lift the suspension on non syncro models. not heard of in england where everything is slammed, ive gotta say,the raised look is miles better,so now my bus is going up in the world ! Smile thanks guys, by the way, anybody got any ideas on alternative diesel exhaust systems/mufflers etc. thanx from the cheshire cat.

How can that be you when you were supposed to be a cat?

Oh, I get it, that's your disguise. Trying to infiltrate the doggy underground. OK, I'm game, I'll shut up now, don't want to blow your cover.....

Non-turbo or turbo diesel?

My recipe for turbodiesels is usually the same: 2.5" mandrel-bent stainless steel, diesel catalyst, free-flow glass-pack muffler in stainless also. I'll usually add a short SS flex section to the pipe near the turbo end. Not sure what's available on your side of the world, here I use pipes and flex sections from http://store.racing-solutions.org/ , and mufflers from http://www.stainless-specialties.com/products2a.htm (Performaster or Mega Oval). Diesel cats are now being made for the aftermarket from Magnaflow, www.kermatdi.com carries these. Once built up, you'll never need another exhaust system.
Here's one I did a few years ago (before the cats were available):

wouldn't you want something that suits your needs and what you intend to do with the van? The US and Canada have vast areas of open country for lots of off roading fun. I imagine there is a bit of that in the UK but mostly you are doing it in the road, a Paul McCartney proposed.

And not for appearence sake only?

240gordy i see your point, and for me it probably is about appearance, but even on this tiny island theres some wonderfully wild places to visit, where extra ground clearence is helpful, plus im a bit fed up of only seeing vans lowered. like most people with vanagons the appearence of the van is what first attracted us. imitation is the sincerest form of flattery Wink dont forget seeing 2wd vans done the way you guys do them was a bit of a revelation for me,it just isnt done over here.

cool. 2 wheel drive I think are seriously under rated off road. my dad drove his type 2 doka all over the mountains, mostly on logging roads.
We went some pretty wild places. My vanagon though is useless whenever it is slippery, unlimited slip differential, I call it. maybe with some knobby tires it could be better.

YMMV.

You may want to see if you can find a Euro source for the GoWesty lift springs. They have them made in Germay by H&R and shipped here.

Are you kidding? You're not fooling anybody with that disguise. That face has "CAT" written all over it.

Besides, the tuna breath is a dead giveaway.

quick update on the syncro rear springs on a 2wd,after 1 week loud clicking noises from cv joints when turning hard, left or right . syncro springs being taken out & lower ones and spacers going in, should take it down to 17.5 inches hub to lip, it was 19.5 inches Shocked too high for a 2wd i reckon,, just wanted to share this info, to save anyone else the hassle,, cheers, cheshire (this cat aint smilin) Mad

you can upgrade your rear CVS to Type-IV (411, Thing err safari or trekker in england?) those have 22' of angle where the Type-II vanagon ones have 17' (beetles are a meager 12' degrees of articulation)
