We bought this 71 Bus about 4 years ago & after only about 6000 miles the engine self-destructed! It was a GEX engine that the previous owner installed & it only had 2000 miles on it when we bought it!
Here is the "all brand new" 1904cc (90.5mm X 74mm) engine I finally finished after 3 1/2 years! It only has a few hundred miles so far & runs excellant!

Great looking engine bay, looks like you have an oil pressure sending unit( = gage)and it looks like you have oil lines showing? =full flowed?
What gages are you running? What cam did you decide on?
Tell us more about your setup and how it drives, torque’y I have a same type of setup in the works :0)
Have you though about getting Aircooled.net to setup a vacuum advance distributor to run with you dual carbs? Maybe you have some additional HP and MPG letf to get out of you setup! _________________ Current VWs 71 T2 Westy SO-72/6(Miami), 71 Crew Cab, 2015 GSW TDI

The engine is all new starting with a Brazilian case & it has the German oil pickup tube. All machining on the case was done by RIMCO.
The counter-weighed 74 mm crankshaft is from DPR, as are the "stroker" rods w/ARP bolts. Didn't need stroker rods with the 74 mm crank, but chose them since they are a bit lighter than stock rods.
Mahle 90.5 forged pistons setup with a 7.6 compression ratio.
The heads are the newer "041" factory heads (39 mm int. & 35.5 mm exh.) that have more material under the valve seats, unlike the older ones that were prone to dropping seats.
It has a Engle 110 cam set "straight up" with German lifters & a stock type timing gear set.
The oil pump is a slightly modified "in & out" Maxi 3 from CB Performance & it has a spin-on oil filter. Soon it will also have a 96 plate oil cooler w/fan & thermostat. A 1 1/2 quart oil sump rounds out the oiling system.
A set of AJ Sims "prepped" 40 mm Kadrons supply air & fuel.
The cylinder head tins are new factory ones from Mexico & a set of "cool tin" hugs the bottom of the cylinders.
Right now, the 009 distributor has a CompuFire points replacement module, which will also be soon replaced with a CompuFire DIS IX "distributorless" ignition system.
The exhaust retains the heater boxes with a 4 into 1 header & a single "Quiet-Pack muffler.
I'm running Castrol 30 wt. oil & it holds 6 qts. I also added some of GM's EOS to help with breakin.
So far, I've only put about 250 miles on it & the torque is amazing!
You can go thru the gears fairly quick & from 55 mph up to 85 mph she pulls hard & gets there real fast!!!
The fuel mileage is only about 15 mpg right now, but after she breaks in I'm hoping for at least 20 mpg.

Thanks for the engine specs, sounds like you are happy with how it runs! I took look a the Compu-Fire it looks like a trouble free setup, would you still benefit from using an SVDA, or 019, 010 as base unit so that you have a better advance curve for you motor?
I did not se that the Compu-Fire can change your advance curve? Although with a name like Compu-Fire it seems as if you should be able to ;0) _________________ Current VWs 71 T2 Westy SO-72/6(Miami), 71 Crew Cab, 2015 GSW TDI

You won't use a vacuum advance type distributor with the Compu-Fire Dis IX. Mechanical advance distributor is the way to go. _________________ Never drive faster than your Angel can fly

CompuFire DIS IX "distributorless" ignition system. |
It's not distributorless since it uses the 009 to trigger the box. That means it relies on the 009s advance curve and lack of precision.
A 1904 will benefit greatly from a better curve, like a Bosch 019. _________________ Glenn

I have a CompuFire DIS IX on the engine in our Meyers Manx buggy & as soon as I finish the Corvair "reverse-rotation" engine & install it, I'll take the setup off the buggy's VW engine & install it on the Bus's 1904.
The CompuFire DIS IX works great!!!
I modified the mechanical advance in the 009 distributor housing to advance an extra 5 degrees!
I also added a tiny bit stronger advance springs to slow down the advance curve & with the Kadrons it works fantastic!
The CompuFire instructions say to gap the sparkplugs at .055", but I've had the best overall results gapping them at .045".
