|
|
| Can anyone direct me to a shop that will convert my 6 volt generator to 12 volt. I have a 64 notch and I have converted it to 12volt accept for the generator and regulator. I did not realize the shroud was different on the 1500. I would like to start driving her and work out a few bugs before I start changing the shroud and all. I'm in South Carolina but I would ship my generator anywhere to get it done. It seem's like I read that the 1600 fan and fly wheel where bigger than the 1500 and the fan cooled better. Is that true? My book shows the same fan for all models or atleast the same volume of air flow. If the fan and flywheel are smaller on the 1500 would they allow hire RPM's and horses if I built up my motor at a later date? Would the diminished air flow/cooling make it not a good idea? I'm just thinking outload!! Thanks in advance, Jim |

6V flywheels were slightly smaller, but not much. The 6V has 109 teeth, and the 12V has 130 teeth. There is no real difference in weight.
All of my books show that the all the T-3 fans put out the same volume of air.
Yes, the 12V fan housing has a different cradle for the generator. _________________ Society is like stew. If you don't keep it stirred up, you end up with a lot of scum on the top!--Edward Abbey

| DDB said they can rewind my 6 volt gen. to 12 volts for $180.00 and about 3 weeks. I was hoping to keep it under $100.00 with freight! Has any body had this done? Did it last and where did you have it done? |

I had it done here in Seattle for about $100 or so. I had mine done at an auto/marine electrical shop... where they rebuild starters, generators, etc. You can probably find a shop locally that can do it. The guy that did mine replaces the 6V field coils from the stock genny with those from a 12V Porsche (356 or 912 IIRC). I can't remember if he also replaces the comutator or not, but its actually a very basic mod nonetheless. Just know that the 6V generator pulley spins too slow at idle to charge the battery, so make sure you have a good cell. _________________ Jim in Sacto -

At that point, I would run a DDB alternator then... _________________ Jim in Sacto -
