Hello,

I'm putting a parts-car '73 fastback on the road with spare parts for use in a rally-cross race circuit here in Colorado.

I need the front end that's in it for my wife's 68 and hers may be too rusty/bent to use even for racing.

Does anyone make new replacement or upgrade torsion tubes/bars setups for type 3?

If not, does a new type 1 or sand-rail front end like those sold by some of the banner sponsors here drop in? If so what are the advantages/disadvantages to that set-up in regards to handling?

If not, what modifications are required to pull it off?

I likely will not lower it unless handling benefits dictate it (which so far I have not see to be the case).

any other ideas?

Thanks in advance.

First year out we'll likely just run stock class with a 1600, 34 webers, standard trans and whatever front end I can find to cram in there that will work well.

If we think we need or would enjoy it, we may go nuts after next season with performance (see SI motor thread)

cheers,

Scott

i like the narrowed front that the type 1 style beam provides, along with the ease of installing 5 lug discs, but you will definetly lose in the handeling dept. they are quite a bit more narrow, and the torsion bars are weaker. for auto crossing, or any serious high performance car, i would stick with the stock type 3 beam, hands down

In terms of performance the type3 beam is superior both in handling and ride department.

But in terms of availability the type3 is at a huge disadvantage both for stock and aftermarket parts.

I don't know what rally-cross is. For auto cross I would go with a type3 beam. If it's like rally racing and you're likely to bend beams doing crazy off road stuff I would go type1 just because new beams are cheap and easy to find.

On the other hand if the rally portion is just dirt/gravel road type stuff I don't the you would be damaging the beam anyway. It's pretty tough.

Stoner A is cylinders #2/4 B is #1/3 The plugged bowl is the throttle, the bong is the manifold

I have 3 or 4 type 3 beams in different stages of tear down, if you need parts or a replacement, let me know, I do not need all these beams

The rally cross here in Colorado is almost always on a flat gravel lot with a corse laid out in cones... there's no jumps or curbs or even large holes to deal with but our friends have gotten their rabbit on the two side wheels before and have bent up their control arms doing it.

I think it will take us a couple years of experience before getting to that level but even then I doubt the rear-engine, rear drive set up will be nearly as hard on the front end.

flip side is that the front will have to be 'just so' for the rear/rear setup to be handle really well in gravel.

The 67 I had after Highschool was killer in the snow, gravel, grass and even on paved it seemed like on the right on/off ramp i could get a nice controlled drift or atleast a consistant howl from the rear tires under throttle.

I'd like to recreate that experience... Twisted Evil

and dude, i'm very interested in one of your T3 front ends, I'm not toooo far from Pheonix
