I have tried to put in an after market lighter, but to no prevail. I do not want to drill a bigger hole in the dash to fit it. And i do not have a silver socket. Let me know or see what you have done!! |

Mine is just right of the steering column in an L bracket attached with the screw that holds the dash pad on. It's barely visible there.

There was already a hole in the underside of my dash on the left side, so I was able to mount an accessory plug there.

A previous owner of my 1974 Westfalia drilled a few holes in the dash. I found an original VW accessory cigarette lighter and filled one of the holes, next to the defroster switch.
This, in addition to the Westfalia "silver socket" underneath the glove box door.

I was just about to buy one at Walmart, but now that I've seen one that looks factory, I'll be holding out until I find one of those! _________________ Eric

They make stickers with the pattern on it. Search for it! _________________ Eric

Mine came with one drilled into the driver side pedistal. It's actually a pretty good spot!! Someone put a light there too which is REALLY handy for camping!! _________________ '73 Transporter 1.7L Dual Carb

My 73 was fitted with A/C and after removing all the condenser units, electric fans, hoses, compressor, ductwork, etc (all 200lbs of it)... there was still this dash mounted switch to remove and turned out to be a perfect spot for my 12V accessory receptacle (cigarette lighter) right next to the hazzard switch.

I got a kit with an "L" bracket from my FLAP store and ran a hot wire to the available spade connector on the fuse box that is always hot. I then hooked up a power inverter (in the glove box) and got a 4-way socket plug (on the parcel tray) to power my fan and my Sirius radio

I've half assed been searching for one of those to replace the early 80's aftermarket one I have in that spot. Does it hang out that much though? or is it just not pushed in all the way. |
