Can't wait! She's a 77 Westy. No Motor, but have a few leads to get one.
Anything I should look out for before purchasing? I know, use the search (and will).
Hoping to get it for 400 bucks... We'll see Monday.
Should be a fun experience! I miss my 63 Westy _________________ 2013-2014 Vice President of SOVW www.sovw.org

The parts alone are probably worth more than $400. _________________ 1978 VW Transporter (DLNDBUS) |

Here's a list of stuff to look at: CV boots and Joints (about 1000 to fix that whole bit at a shop), check the trans, fuel pump, tie rods, pop top canvas...originals are usually shot, so there's a quick 300 you can spend for a replacement, see if the steering is loose or tight...loose is of course bad. These are just a few things that I have done to my 73...so it's nice to know what to expect. For the engine...if you want a good used one...check the classified ads here or even for a new one...a new engine will cost about 1500-2000, but that's brand new everything...find a nice rebuild for about 600! _________________ Ein VW Muss Man Haben!!

You can find them all over the place here for about that price... But the interior is what caught my eye... Looks very clean and complete... I'll check it out in person this Monday...Take pics. _________________ 2013-2014 Vice President of SOVW www.sovw.org

Can you let me in on the secret stash? Im finding rebuilt engines (quality) for anywhere between $2000 min to $5000. $600 will get you a used engine for sure, but Im not sure about rebuilt. |

Used engine would be perfect... Our club has a shop that does quality work. Yeah! _________________ 2013-2014 Vice President of SOVW www.sovw.org

No, but it's a heck of a lot cheaper! Given that you start out with a good core. _________________ 2013-2014 Vice President of SOVW www.sovw.org

There are no new Type 4 engines.
A quality rebuild is going to cost you about $3K and up. |

My PO rebuilt the engine.
Eh, I think, he gave me a recite for it, but it probably wasn't 3k.
Is a.. just flat out rebuild better than none.
Can they rebuild it bad? |

Suggestion....
I know some of you guys are kind of new here, but if you are considering buying something like an engine, go over to the "Buyer and Seller Forum" and search for "engine" or "GEX" or "Lowbugget" or "Boston Engine" or "Raby", and see how the buyer and seller rate each other.
There are some very good ones out there and they are some really lousy ones also.
Chose wisely.... |
