I've been driving my 65 around and it runs fine but when I shift into third gear I start getting this noise and in forth the noise is a little louder but if I take my foot off the gas pedel the noise will stop and as I go faster the noise will get louder too WEIRD! .I have no clue what that is oh and I can feel a lot of movement when I move the shifter around in any gear. So if anybody knows what this could be please let me know so I can fix this problem this weekend. Thanx |

Change the fluid, probably just wearing out, but should last a while longer, unless it gets really really loud, also might be wheel bearings, maybe, |

Sounds like the pinion bearing is trying to tell you its time. _________________ Working on a VW is like fun with a friend!

Loose shifter has nothing to do with the noise. Check/replace your front shift rod bushing, and same for the coupler under the rear seat.
Try changing fluid, adding a tube of MoS2 grease halfway thruogh the fill. |

Mainshaft ball bearing. It is adjacent to 4th gear, so that's why the noise is greatest in 4th. _________________
