hi guys i have a 1600 that ran great (it was rebuilt before but the heads had a crack so they were no good) and i may build a 1641 just to put in my 68 so i can drive it in and out without having to push it (the original 1500 is going back in it when its done).now i want to put a cam that would make it lope (always like the sound of a lopey cam combined with a stinger) but still run good.im using a AE case, going to swap out the cam,1641 jugs (new ones i got laying around),dual port heads (maybe polished..i dunno),stock 34 pict 3 carb and a stock 73 vaccumm dizzy that still works great.thanks |

I put an Engle 120 in my 1641, gives it a good sound and has a good powerband. |

I would think an Engle 120 would be pretty big if you were still planning on using a 34 pict carb. A lot of off-road buggy guys I know have nice running 1641's that would work well in a street car. Popular cams they use are Engle's W100, CB's Eagle 2280, and Crower's 61002. You could have the heads flycut slightly to raise your compression up to 8.5-9 to 1, and that would give you a boost in power. The shop I work at built a 1600 single port engine for a 68 Beetle that had the stock solex 30 pict carb, 61002 cam, and around 8.5 to 1 compression. The owner couldn't believe how much of an improvement it was over the stock 1500. |
