Why am I loosing power and acceleration when my Air Conditioning is on?

Is there an electrical part getting weak an dneeding replaced?

What can I do to improve this...

might it be a good idea anyways to replace old ignition coil with a high performance one?

has anyone done this? or anyone gone thru this?

I think loosing power while using the AC is pretty standard. Your engine only puts out so much power and when you turn the AC on it has to power the compressor as well so there isnt as much power available to propel you forward.

i switch mine off, then back on at speed. it works well for that sluggish feeling in the first few gears.

Yes this is true. If it takes 5 hp to run the air conditioning compressor then you have only 85 remaining, and that's at peak RPM 4100.

If you are running at 3000 rpm where you have say,,,,70 HP then the available HP remaining to push the car drops to 65.

The only 'fix' for this is to increase horsepower or change the weather.

You could add a switch to deactivate the compressor clutch under full throttle.

I don't know if you were just being funny but that sounds like a great idea to me.

We have signs all over Arizona at the steep grades telling you to turn your AC off. Wonder if that was meant for the Vanagons only?

Its pretty common on a lot of newer cars to have the compressor disengage under full throttle. Seems like it might be pretty easy to rig something up for a vanagon.
