Need to know the amount of turns out for both screws on the left hand side of the carb for a stock 1600cc DP motor. My buddy tinkered and now the ghia will not idle barely. Good compression, valves just adjusted. Thanks in advance. _________________ Cars, firearms & jetskis, gotta love'em |

Every engine is going to have its own best setting for those screws. Especially if it's got a distributor that has a different idle speed timing than what the factory originally mated with that carb. A good tip, is that whenever you find the best setting for them it's a good idea to make a note of what they are for future referenece - screw each of them in gently until they bottom out, counting how many turns (or half turns if you count like I do) and write them down somewhere, That way you'll have a baseline to go by in the future. Then return the settings to where they were before.
Anyway, The standard initial setup procedure... The volume screw is the small screw, and the bypass (idle speed) is the large screw. Just make sure the engine is warmed up and the choke is warmed up as well and fully backed off. Then, well instead of typing it out, here's right out of the Bentley manual, do steps 4-10.

| Make sure the carb is good before you spend too much time trying to get it to work right. With the engine warm have someone start the engine while you keep it running with the throttle lever. Try to hold the RPM steady and spray carb cleaner around anything that might be sucking air. If at any point the RPM’s increase, you have an air leak at that location. My carb is sucking air at the right side of the throttle shaft, which basically means the carb is junk and no amount of adjusting will get it to idle correctly. I’ve read about re-bushing this shaft but my local parts store says no and for the price of a new carb it’s probably not worth the hassle. Good Luck |

Many people including myself will disagree with you. I had my original German Solex 30's shaft rebushed for $25 dollars. I rebuilt the rest of the carb at a cost of the $12 dollar kit and it works beautifully. The new carbs being sold are suspect in regards to quality. _________________ Contact me at [email protected]

The carb was good until my buddy messed with it. I'll take the advice and go tune it in rite now. _________________ Cars, firearms & jetskis, gotta love'em |

| Mine is a Bocar, and there are no bushings on the shaft to replace. I wish there were, I would fix it that way if I could find the right bushing. I think the important thing here is for jjenson to figure out if he has an air leak in his carb and then decide what to do about it depending on what make it is (German Solex, Bocar or Empi). |
