I took my rail out Sun for the first time. It was put up all winter and was running great before. I would start it every couple of weeks ,no issues, lit up on the first try and idled great. Five minutes or so into our ride the motor got very rough. I pulled over and took a look. I heard gas gurgling and when I took off the air cleaner gas was all the to the top of the carb. I thought it was going to overflow.I let it sit about 15 min and was able to start it and drive it home. I parked it and when I went to the garage this morn it reeked of gas. My eng is a 1600 dp,all stock just a pertronix and a header in a street legal rail . I have a 009 dist and a pict carb. without a fuel press regulator. I doubt I have 25 hrs on a complete tune up. Any ideas? I am considering putting this Chenowth rail on the market..always something and I am no great VW mech for sure.

Have you tried putting a fuel gauge on your discharge line just to be sure your fuel pressure is ok? What kind of carb setup are you running?

massive flooding of the carb, is generally
a needle and seat problem on a center
stock mounted carb....
as stated above, sometimes excessive fuel pressure
can also be a problem....but I would inspect/check
the needle and seat first....since you had no
issues last summer/season

X3 on stuck needle valve - bet if you whack the carb it will stop. Best to pop the top and clean it out.

Thanks for all the feedback,I will try giving it a love tap and see if that clears it out.I read that it is possible to dislodge whatever junk is in there by putting your hand over the throat with the motor running ,the vacuum pulls the dirt out. I am not to thrilled with taking the carb apart if I don't have to. I am not sure what I would be looking for.

All you are doing is pulling the fuel line off and plugging it. Then take the 6 screws that hold the top on out. Gently remove the top and try not to damage the gasket.

Look in the bowl and see if there is a bunch of crud in the bottom. If so, clean it out and maybe install a new fuel filter. Also, see is the float is floating or not stuck in the down position.

Now - take the carb top to the workbench and identify the needlw valve (brass - about 1" diameter and its screwed into the carb top. Unbolt it and clean it out while working the little plunger. BLow into the fuel inlet line which working the plunger. You should be cleaned out. Put the top back on and screw it down.

Thanks for all the input. I got the carb working ok. I started it and let it idle for a few minutes with no issues. I hopped in it and thought I would take a short drive around our property, when I shifted to 2nd the motor started to bog and when I pushed the revs up it was blowing black smoke like crazy. I shut it off and found the air cleaner full of oil. I have a vent tube from the oil filler neck to the base of the air filter. I saw a trail of oil this morning in the drive. It was late last nite and I was a bit PO so I did not look to see where all the oil was coming from. I hope the motor didn't break. This may be a job for the pros unless someone local would like to stop by and take a look.

I don't know if this helps but I was having a similar problem and I almost bough a new carb, it ended up being a bad float, it was letting fuel in it and not floating right. Now she runs fine. Just my 2 cents.
