Whilst installing one of Gary Lee's Tire Carriers onto my 1991 Factory Diesel Syncro (Air snorkel on LHD driver's side) we found a mystery air pump tucked into the corner of the engine compartment that tee's into the snorkel upstream of the air filter and pumps (Gary was suggeting it was a pump) air into a tube that disappears down under the engine.

Bentley doesn't seem to have any reference to it.

Anybody know what it does?

Thanks,

Cody

In my 92 passat, I had an air pump by the spare wheel, all tucked into a soft cushioned cover.
It controlled several things, including the central locking. Non electric then. I can't remember what else. I guess, being a 91, diesel, (hence a german import?), you may have such a similar add-on. Sorry, I am trying to think what kind of accessories VW could have there....

Not too much of a help...

Diesel don't create manifold vacuum so typically they will have a vacuum pump to supply the brake booster and other systems with vacuum.

As I also replied on the Diesel Vanagon Yahoo-group, this is probably a turbo cooling fan. The factory TD's all had this small fan to help cool the turbo after shut-down.

Took the Skid plate off and followed the hose and it does as shown in last post.

How do I insert a photo?

Thanks,

Cody

There are formatting buttons when you're typing a post, use the one marked "Img", then insert the URL to your picture (which has to be on the internet somewhere, not your hard drive), then click the "Img" button again.

From what SyncroSerge and others tell me it would appear to be cooling the turbo.

Thanks for the replies.

Here are some photos to explicate:

Looking at back of van with driver's side tail light removed:

Looking into the rear left panel through the rear light opening

Looking at the pump from the engine bay side
Note realy connection. Hose in background is intake from Rear panel air inlet:

Outlet hose goes from pump and disappears under the engine:

I don't have any photos of the pipe that the hose is attached to going from there over to the Turbo.

Cheers,

Cody
