Advice? Ask a lot of questions, read and search through the forums, and DON'T THROW ANYTHING AWAY. Oh, and most reproduction parts are crap. Refurbish what you have. _________________ West Virginia State Board of Education v. Barnette, 319 U.S. 624 (1943) |

Don't try to replace that nose. Tap it out, it doesn't look that bad.
Good luck and ask LOTS of questions... and echoing what ICY said, bag and tag everything. Keep us posted. |

Hey thanks alot for the replys guys, I have an industrial sized box of gallon ziplock baggies for all the stuff, I also bought a wrecked 66 ghia couple for sheet metal replacement. Its rusted in almost exactly the opposite spots as this one. I have already beat the nose back to shape just needs a tiny bit of massaging to get back to perfect. The rockers are good but the very back of the quarter panels below the bumpers are shot, the spare tire area and the hood and motor cover are all shot, with a few other little spots that will require a little patching here and there. Thank fully the pans are solid. More pics later tonight. _________________ 63 ghia coupe |

Looks like a great start! I would say that the hoods are different (see http://www.karmannghia.com/products.asp?strMasterCat=1025&strYear=&strBodyType= ) I would say that they are most likely different in the latch area but I'm not sure.
And, I'm pretty sure you can take the body off w/o pulling the engine first. I would pull the engine first because I typically end messing something up that I don't mean to!
Congrats and good luck on your project! |

Hell, I forgot the most important piece of advice: Buy a Bentley repair manual. In your case, the 61-65 Type 1 manual. _________________ West Virginia State Board of Education v. Barnette, 319 U.S. 624 (1943) |

| Sure looks in better shape than my '74. Take your time and do it right the first time. Buy every repair manual you can get your hands on. Read all you can find. And don't be afraid to ask, the people on this forum have been great. |

| Also, order something from KGP&R (their add is on the bottom of this page) - or at least order their catalog. It is a good reference, and has exploded views of every part of the car. It is a pretty good reference - and decent company to deal with. The other main supplier is House of Ghia. |

Hi Motorhead,
May sound abit of a stupid question, but what are you planning to do with the car? In other words what type of restoration?

I like that original color. To echo Broadacus, what are your long term plans? _________________ West Virginia State Board of Education v. Barnette, 319 U.S. 624 (1943) |

Hey guys, The plan for the car is pretty much an original restoration, stock interior, 1600 dp motor, 12V, stock steelies and vw hub caps, stock size tires, Color will be black all chrome new or refinished, 2 in narrowed front beam and dropped spindles and drop the rear an inch or so. Its for my wife so not to low but i want the tires tucked into the fenderwells. I want to do something witht the trans to make it a little better hwy cruiser. Ive got a Vdub guy an hr away that is gonna help me with that stuff.
What are the spring plates for lowering the rear u guys talk about and where can i get them?
Thanks _________________ 63 ghia coupe |
