Evening guys,

I may have found a set of new old stock Mahle forged BnPs, what am I looking for to confirm they are a decent 94mm set? Any distinguishing features to spot?

Cheers.

the little mahle insignia on top. as the qsc cast pistons look just like the old forged mahles.

Question is, are these any better than the new AA kits and if so are they worth the £300 asking over £180 for AA?

I've been running the Brazilian-made Mahle 94 mm kit in my street strip Beetle for many years without issue. I have over 200 HP to the wheels and shift at 7800-8000 rpm. No issues with the wrist pin area cracking (like you will sometimes see posted with AA pistons).

Looks genuine. BUT. Beware if the set is produced in 2009 -10 and maybe some of 11. With set from that period I have seen a lot of especially 94 mm cylinders that were up to 4/100 out of round. Not so bad on the other sizes. but worth checking. not much fun in putting an engine together that burns oil and has a lot of blowby because of that.

picture shows that is a 2007 lot, the quality should be excellent. They were genuine Mahle cylinders at that time.

Cheers guys. Worth 70% more than the AA's? That's the biggy for me... I know people are running the new stuff from AA with good results...

"better", FOR WHAT?

I have personally used Mahle to 28psi boost and 7500 RPMs. I would not use Hypereutectic AAs even to 8psi boost, but that's just me.

Mahle forged are overkill for a majority of applications. IOW, it doesn't make sense to use a $400 P&C set when a $200 set will do just fine most of the time.

Well my current Mahle's have lasted since 1989 when I built this eng, will AA's hold up like that? Currently Im running N/A but as soon as I get the cylinders replaced Im adding fuel injection. After the injection is done I might add a turbo to get back some of what I lost moving to higher altitude unless the injection is enough for me.

If you are going to turbo I'd definitely go Mahle over AA, but that's me.
