Hi All, This is my first post and I'm glad I found this site! I just recently bought a 91 VW Vanagon. I've had it about 6 weeks and drove it about 400 miles. It has seemed to be in good condition except a couple of leaks from power steering and I think transmission and maybe an oil leak too. When it starts off it changes from 1st to 2nd very smooth, But most of the time you have to let off the gas at 35 or so and it'll change to drive. Then it runs smooth. Now, the other night we went to town and had some power steering and transmission fluid added and after driving about 2 miles the heat gauge light started blinking. I told my wife to pull over and switch it off. When she did I could hear a strange noise coming from the fan motor i guess. I got out and looked and water was dripping out from under the engine area. The next day she went and drove it home after adding water and when she got home there wasn't any water leaking out then. The water reservoir behind the license plate is full of water. So, now I'm confused. Where do I add the water/antifreeze and just excatly how do add it and bleed the water system?? I'd like to get the heating problem fixed first then i'll get the rest fixed. Thanks in advance for any help.

Check the Haynes Manual, it's good on the short-term symptomatic diagnoses, check the Bentley for serious knowledge, and here, check The Search, which will tell you more than you ever thought you needed to know about bleeding your cooling system. It's not easy, but it's possible. Sounds like air got in--and will probably get in again--and you do want to get rid of it to relieve some of the pressure in your cooling system.
