I have a buggy that I keep locking up the motors. It has a 1915 in it. for some reason I keep locking up the engine. Lack of oil is what I am thinking the problem is. The case is full flowed and i have a external oil filter and external oil cooler. There is about 13 feet of oil line between the filter, cooler and block. I think what is happening is I am filling up everything except the case. because when I check the oil it shows full, but when I start it, I think I am empty. anyone have any suggestions on expanding the oil chamber? I don't think a sump is what I need because it doesn't draw from the bottom of sump. on my hill climbs all the oil runs to the back(or front) of motor and doesn't have enough oil for pick up. any suggestions would really be helpful. |

that does seem like a awful lot of hose. I don't think I had close to that amount when I was dry sumped. I would real try to fix that first. It's possible that after you fill your hoses there isn't any oil left in the block for the engine. I know with my Maxi 2 pump and external oil cooler my engine take 4qts to reach the full line on the dipstick when the engine is running. Hope this helps. |

on my type 1 full flowed baja the oil cooler in clear up front in the spare tire well- a good 15 ft of hose with no problems at all for 10 years! I do pull coil wire off and turn motor over till oil light goes out after i change oil..
i did just come acrossed a baja that had the oil lines going to the remote oil filter on backwards as in the the oil line coming out of motor going to the "out" of remote filter! most oil filters are one way with a silcone flap in them....
is the oil draining back into motor when it gets shut off? |

I run about 15 feet of oil hose as well. Believe its 11 quarts to fill motor to proper level while the engine is running.(dry filter/cooler/hoses) If the bug sits for a while, I have to turn it over by hand force oil out so it wont hydro lock. Makes for shaky and smokey start ups sometimes! And lots of fouled plugs. Car regularly sits for months at a time. Every thing but the filter will drain back. |

You may have to invest in an anti-drain back valve. That will allow your lines to fill and stay full. Then you can top off the case as needed without fear of it overfilling the crank case after it sits for a while. |

Thanks for the input guys. I see some of you mentioned checking the oil while it is running, but I figured if I fill it to that point while it's running that when I shut it down I will have a hard time starting because of filling the push rod tubes, heads full of oil. because thats the next place for the oil to go. Been actually thinking about doing away with the external cooler and putting a 60 horse cooler back on it, so I can do away with about 6 feet of hose. I've still got the case apart trying to figure it all out.

I also have probably 15' of -8 oil line in my car.
What oil pump are you using and what brand of oil and filter?
Stated before, you need a filter with an anti drainback valve in it to start with. Most do not have them.
Do you have any photos you can share with us?

When the motor starts up, it pumps the filter, cooler, and the long lines full of oil but by the time the oil reaches the parts that need oil it is to late. Put in an anti-drain back valve. Then start it and let it run for 30 sec, add more oil. Next drive it around the block and add more oil if need. _________________ REMEMBER- Build a good engine from the the ground up and you will not need to add on extra junk to cover the mistakes.-John Muir
