I am working on upgrading my '90 Westy and need some recomendations on tires. I just picked up the 16" rim package from Gowesty yet choose not to get the tires they sell based on some issues I read about the load rating that the van requires (GW tires do not meet that rating). So, I wanted to see if Samba members could help me out. I have done a search and cannot locate a topic in the forum that covers this issue. Quite a bit about rims though. So, I have a '90 2wd Full Camper. Standard springs with new 16" rims. I live in San Diego so the van will not see much snow so a snow tire is not needed. I would like an A/T tire as I do take trips to Baja from time to time though I do not do much off road when there.
Pls let me know what direction you would recomend. Thanks in advance and if there is a link to this topic here or elsewhere please pass it on.

Here's what I went with for 16" A/T. I didn't want to increase the rolling diameter too drastically. Love 'em so far. Quiet, but someone said they get louder over time (as I think most tires do).
215/60R16 Yokohama Geolander AT-S. Treadwear: 500, Load: 1521 lbs., max pressure: 51 psi, diameter: 26.1", revs per mile: 796

I have these on my 82 Westy w/16" after-market (Audi A6) rims
ContiProContact - 225/55R16 99H AUD XL
http://www.discounttiredirect.com/direct/tires/continental/size/viewProductDetail.do?pc=26586
I live in the South so snow really isn't really an issue for me but they're VERY impressive in rain
'XL'/99 load rating (1709 lb)
H-rated (130 mph) - not something you're likely to experience but it tends to give you a stiffer sidewall and a better 'road feel'
the rest of the rating is:
Treadwear: 400
Traction: A
Temperature: A

not cheap but I love them
I went from a 205/70HR15 on factory alloy wheels to these
The difference in road wander was like night and day

(ps - i also run H&R lowering springs with Bilstein HD's)

If you can return the rims for the 15s it would give you a much better choice of tires.

I put these on my rims from Go Westy. P215/65R-16 YOKOHAMA AVID TRZ I have a TDI engine and was looking for a taller tire over stock. I don't think you'll get much more tire on the Go Westy 16 rims without raising the ride height. My Vanagon just fits in my garage. That was important too.

CraigL,

Try the tire rack. You can google it. They have a good selection of tires, specs and reviews.

Good Luck

Continental has a newer tire designed for vans out that I'm getting ready to try when I get my rims. Its the Vanco Contact2. The tire has a 99 Load Index in the 215/60/R16 size. 51 psi max inflation and 799 revs per mile. They are designed for high center vans (our westies qualify for that) and the reviews and specs look very promising.

I have these on my Tacoma and I've been really happy with them. I drive lots of unimproved roads and they haven't let me down. Aggressive enough without being silly loud.
I went with the Nokians on my van since tire wear was not an issue for me and I wanted something that would do better in the snow.

edit: Are these available in a C-ply in that size? If I was going to baja, I would want a reinforced side-wall tire. Flat tires suck. Flat tires in the middle of no-where Mexico really suck.

I just installed four BF Goodrich TA long trails 215/70/16 on my 87 two wheel drive, with VOXX MG rims.
They ride and handling very nice, and I got a 10% lower RPM. I have a Subaru 2.5 in my Vanagon
This is my third set of BFG I have purchased
I got the package from Discount Tire for $692.00 delivered after repate.

Yes
The 20 MM ET went on just fine. I purchased new studs for the rear, but got over 8 turns on the studs that where already in the hub.
I would post a picture but I can not seem to post one.

I have a set of VancoContact (2?) tires on my van, albeit in the 15" size. So far, so good.
