|
|
I am posting some pics of a 200 series rear window wiper motor that I pulled out of a car at pic and pull. The motor on the left is a lowlight 57 motor that I restored. These motors look to be a direct swap with a brush swap. The Volvo motor is a single speed 12 volt motor. You could pull the armature out of it for your conversion or swap the brush/ connector setup and bottom cover and be good to go with 12 volt. They had it listed for 21.00. They guy at the counter had a super beetle and thought he was an expert on bugs and charged me 9.00 for my "regulator"

Dr d really got my attention with that, and now here you are with the
part...now say nothing matches or is terribly OG on a 63 beetle.
Is this piece a bolt on deal or do I need to fiddle around with the
gut swapping? |

It is not a straight bolt on. You need to remove the cap on your motor. Then you can do it two ways. take the Volvo motor cap off. remove the brushes. Take out the armature. Do the same thing to your motor and put the armature from the Volvo motor into your motor. The other way is harder and more work. You take the brushes and wire connector from your motor and put it on the Volvo motor. Then take your bottom cover from your motor and put it on the Volvo motor. If you want me to do it pm me and we can work somthing out. Its not too hard of job and your motor probably need new grease anyway. |

Going to pick one up now; cheapest I could get it for here is $35. One condecending prick wanted $100 from the "ma'am" who couldn't tell him the year of her Volvo; even when I explained it was for a VW. Going to drive by and egg his business. _________________ '63 Beetle "Gertie"

Or maybe he was charging me an estrogen surcharge.
Well, the guys at the wrecking yard removed it for me (I was the door prop since the hydraulics were long gone) and even bench tested it. It is missing the small spring inside and we guess it fell off when it was wrestled from it's perch. I think I have a small spring that will work...hopefully. _________________ '63 Beetle "Gertie"

If you are referring to the spring on the brushes, the one on your motor might work? I have not torn it apart yet. |

I might run by my friendly salvage yard and see how many Volvo's he has.
I have known him for over 40 years. He should treat me right.
What wrenches do I need to pull them out? _________________ Society is like stew. If you don't keep it stirred up, you end up with a lot of scum on the top!--Edward Abbey

The main motor has itty bitty 9mm ones. I couldn't tell you about what you need to pull it since the guys wouldn't let me do it. If possible, bring a 2x4 in case the door hydraulics don't work, since I'll be busy tomorrow! _________________ '63 Beetle "Gertie"

I found mine on a 240. I looked at 740 but the motor was gone. I believe that they are on 200 series wagons. To clarify it again, it is the "rear" wiper motor. The one I removed was primo. They don't get banged around and so the top cover is like new. |

1980 - 1993 Volvo 245 (240 model station wagon) rear wiper motor. I'd bet the 145 (older) would work too. _________________ Midwest Autosavers, Inc. Crystal Lake, IL |

One thing to watch out for... The 240 series wagons had wiring issues through the tailgate hinge. This caused many rear wipers to either "quit working" ( and those are in primo shape because many owners wouldn't pay to get them fixed) or some BURNED UP from wiring short.
SO... check the motor first before purchasing and don't buy a burned up unit.
You can flip the bail down and take off the "bread box" cover and see right away what you got.
Just thought I would pass that along. My family and I have had many 240 wagons starting way back for a 72 model bought new. And I have dealt with the wiring and burned up motors a few times
I never though about checking them for use on the VW though. Neat that they work for that early single speed conversion. |

Are these for sure the correct years? I spent about an hour and a half at our local pull-a-part and came home empty handed. I looked at about 10 wagons labeled as 1986 and 1987 and they all had the "newer" style wiper motor and not the type that looks like a early vw motor. I found a few 1984s, but they had already been robbed so I don't know what type they had.
Not doubting your information, but I was planning on calling a few of the other yards around here and just want to be certain as to what years to look for.
