Thank you so much for this forum, by searching and reading through massive amounts of info I believe i finally figured out my problem.

I do still have a couple questions.

So i picked up a non running bus for 400 bucks, they said it just needed carbs but hadn't run for 5 years.

After putting on some new webers i found that my trans would not engage. i pulled the engine/trans and then separated them. I found that the innermost gear on the torque converter was chewed up but only at the end. I pulled the shaft and it looked fine. After researching it looks like the wrong rod was installed and thus is too short. (made for type three or 411/412?)

My first question is this, with the rod installed in the transmission should all three rods line up?- in length i mean. My pump shaft is shorter than the other two:
(looks like this, cross-section)

----
----
--
----
----

My second question is where i could find the right shaft... It seems like others on here have had problems locating one. Anybody have one or know where to get one? The correct length would be 21 11/16" I believe.

Thanks for looking and providing any help you can, I hope that wasn't too wordy.

one other question, where my shifter linkage connects to the tranmission...the little metal tab, should that click in and out of gears as i move it? The only time it seems to have any click to it at all is when it goes into park. Just wondering if that is normal. Thanks again.

I have a 73 auto trans that I'm getting rebuilt also.
I called an old transmission shop in my area and he said he still has the kits for the old vw's in stock.
I suggest trying this route to get more info on the part you need.

Your outer shaft (turbine shaft) should be 18". The inner shaft (pump shaft) is 21 11/16". When assembled the inner shaft extends beyond the outer by about 3/4".

I would guess that a Vanagon shaft would work, but am not sure. I have one laying around and will try to measure it tomorrow. Since you have to replace the torque converter anyway, I would recommend using a "Z" torque converter from 82 or newer AC Vanagon. VW makes this recommendation in the Vanagon edition of the Bentley. The later torque converters have higher stall speeds and give you more oomph off the line and on hills.

The '73 Bus Automatic is a one year only trans from what I understand. The linkage is one year only-mounts on the left, rather than the right as opposed to 74-up. Have fun with that. I had a pump shaft break on my 73, had the trans rebuilt. Linkage cable broke, scoured the earth and found a new one. Rebuilt trans started slipping. Replaced with a 4 speed manual. The improvement in fuel milage, acceleration, and towing was profound!

Thank you, that helps a lot

As far as the changing to manual, i would perfer to stay stock as long as possible. I understand that parts are rare but isn't that kind of the point?

Does anyone know for sure if the 82 or newer torque converter will fit?

I have run a "Z" converter in my '72 411 with an 003 tranny for 4 years now. It gave a major increase in starting torque over the converter that was in there prior to that, which was a "D". The code letters are stamped one of the three mounting bosses.

I do not know if the "H" converter out of a water cooled Vanagon would work or not. Probably it would, but I just can't say for sure.

Found the shaft...

I got it from Long enterprises
(707) 829- 1169 phone
Hours: Monday-Thursday 9-5 (Pacific Time)

I found them to be helpful and knowledgeable, but a bit pricey.
I guess beggars can't be choosers

And the sent the wrong part... Thanks so much Long enterprises. I cant believe after a 5 minute chat about the different lengths off 003 tranny pump shafts the actually sent me the wrong one. measuring 19 15/16". They are closed so i'll be calling them tommorow
