So I'm going to take my '91 in for an oil change, I'd do it myself but the landlord gets pissed about working on my car in the driveway. Is a champ oil filter bad news, or will that be alright? I've heard they're picky, so if it's not ok, what brands are?

You have 4 choices and 4 only.

Mann, Mahle, Wix, or NAPA Gold.
( NAPA GOLD is a Wix filter )

You need to find one of the German filters. Mann is the brand most people buy. If you can't find it in town, run out to Los Osos and pick one up from GoWesty. I'm sure it's a great day there like always. Go spend some time on the beach!

NEW'S FLASH;

OR---Vanagon Oil Filter update;

Wix or NAPA Gold is as good, if not better than the Kruat oil filter's, using the same one way rubber flapper valving, and filter media as the made in Duetschland filters.

Now you know the rest of the story---
