Just saying HELLO to everyone here, great site I have been looking at alot of the threads on here lots of great info on here.
I'm 36 years old I have had your typical old cars:nova,mustang blah,blah.
I bought a 1968 bug about month ago for $950 bucks I brought it off of craigslist the guy had 3 pics of the car the outside of the car look good, so gave him a $400 deposit via paypal, went pick car up and pay rest it off. Gee I was surprised what I had gotten myself into, My buddy Dan went with me to get the car.
The car was only 70 miles away but I'll tell you the car was in Washington DC. I have never been to DC in my life, And I'll never go again.
Anyway Dan had 4-5 bugs so he knows little about them I know nothing about vw bugs if its a Chevy I can tell you about it. Its a good car to fix up he says(dan) both floor pans are gone, rear metal behind back seat is going, heater channels on driver side going inside list goes on on on.
My buddy says all that stuff is replac.. I got car home started looking for what I need to get etc check on the web for prices etc.
i did not know there was so much stuff you get for a bug, The Bug has been one of the cars I have always wanted to do, I have really nice bugs in my town, I was thinking og doing a nice ride with some lowering etc.
I been reading about bug stuff for about month came across SAMBA
the is great info site, JUST SEARCH YOU WILL FIND.....Found this to be the best info you can get.
I just have get busy on the rebuild:
1. floor pans need done...
2. frame head needs replaced....
3. front beam needs replaced...
4. new brake line,brakes,ball joints,tie rods,etc....
5. motor needs tune up>>>like go with 1835cc
6. body in primer...
7. new carpet,door panels,odds+ends(door handles in and out,etc etc)
list goes on
I have did a list of stuff I need to get and do broke down into a MOD list and a factory fix list, To be honest I going to have:
$3500 in the list stuff I want to do which ALOT STUFF FOR $3500
the whole car will in the shap and style that make me happy!!!!
I started restoring a 1968 chevy nova 2 years ago I had over $12,000 in the car I was no even 75% done with it.
I dont know why i did go to bug 20 years ago when started tinking with cars. (I WILL NEVER GO BACK TO A CHEVY,FORD ETC) again. I just became a Die hard VW GUY in less than a month.
My buddy says its called The "BUG THING" I sleep, dream,talk about my Bug all the time the wife told me "shut up" couple times about the Bug.
In closing thanks for reading this.
I will keep posted on the build

I like the look of the car, '68 is stuck between a rock and a hard place, more like earlier models, but classified as a late model. good luck.

First, welcome.
Second, I am not located to far from you, (Ranson WV about 45 minutes away) and would be glad to help you with the mechanicals, and even can help you put the floors in if you want. (I have all the welding tools you'll need if you don't). The frame head is a little more difficult. I can recommend some local shops who can do it for you if you're interested. Some pics of what it looks like would be very helpful.
Third, we (me and about 12 others) meet at the Ranson McDonalds every 2nd Sat of the month and talk VWs and bring our cars out. You are welcome to come. The cars range from REALLY nice, to drivers that need A LOT of work.

Congrats - you just got your invitation into the local VW underground. That is one of the best things you can get........Have fun and don't get discouraged. And something VERY important - it aint a Chevy and if the part is there, it's there for a darn good reason. VWs are very easy to work on and very straightforward, which is a little different than Detroit or Dearborn...And one of the best pieces of advice I ever got was "Don't overthink stuff on a VW".....

I'm partial to late 60's bugs myself. Here's a couple shots of my recent '69 project.
When purchasing parts, don't skimp, you get what you pay for.

Thanks guys for warm welcome. I think must of the stuff on Bug is nice to still get it. My dad said same thing thats why its there because you need it.
Lots of parts to choose from.
The floor pans and frame head is going to be a big task for me. I had a nice garage last year, but do money thing like everyone else is going threw.
I had to down size to mobile home one these days I build another garage.
I do have welder, tools etc. I used to do auto bodywork for living, got laid off last year so I got job at Advance auto parts last Augus.
I have read some threads on frame head, did some research on the net, looks like not to hard as long you get all stuff lined upped etc. The floor pans I did a set 4 years ago on my buddy vw it was a 65 bug but I had the boss there to walk me threw it was not hard, just alot time getting things all ready to weld etc.
I ordered one Of 'Bug me" videos from Mid America Motorworks on the floor pan repair.
I also order my frame head and chassis/firewall from MAM today.
I been reading on floor pans I going with full pans both sides, just can not narrow it down to a vendor, SHIPPING KILLS ya on anything from west coast $240 for pans $120 for shipping thats a killer for me that $120 I spend somewhere else.
I was looking at JC WHITNEY both pans shipped $226 but seems there thickness on pan metal is thin 22 gauge I did order a front beam from jc whitney Its a rebuilt one with torsion adjusters are ready installed for $118 shipped $6.00 of that was fedex 2 to 3 day shipping etc.

You gets what you pays for. Cheap is generally cheap. IF you can find the origin or brand of the part your buy from JCW, you can save a few bucks, but if there is no info on the origin, it is often crap. Be careful. Check for local retailers in the VA area, you might be able to save a few bucks.
Personally I mainly default to buying the best the first time. It saves money/time/anguish in the long run.
