I need to swap the rear bearing carriers and install new inner and outer bearings. Bentley shows using special VW tool and a press... neither of which I have.
Can this be done in a sensible way without a press or should I just drop it to my local workshop?
(long story - the westie I have has Oettinger style rear disc conversion with internal drum parking brake but some components are damaged and sourcing replacements has proved impossible - so am swapping to Epytec rear brake conversion - but the rear bearing carriers have been modified to suit the (BMW?) backing plates used by Oettinger....
So, after sourcing some rear carrier (with the rare ABS sensor mount) I have to swap the whole thing out....)
Advice (useful please...) gratefully received....

Rent a ball joint press kit and use a high torque impact wrench to press them in.

Oettinger style rear disc conversion with internal drum parking brake
Now this is cool, first I've heard of this style rear brake.
Which parts are you having trouble sourcing?
Oettinger is synonymous with quality.
Just a note on installing the rear bearings:
The inner most bearing you install till it seats up against the stop in the casting.
The outer most bearing you press in until it is in the correct position, DO NOT SEAT IT HARD up in the casting, it will be in TOO FAR.
Bentley is incorrect on this bearing install diagram. |

Wow, thank you so much for posting pictures, I've been wanting to see that for 20 years!
The hub seems cast specifically for this set up! Interesting.
There's a Facebook page about Oettinger vans, some people have put usefull info about these parts and replacements. _________________ Silicone Steering Boots and 930 Cv boots for sale in the classifieds.

I have never had any diffuculty, when replacing rear wheel bearings on the Vanagon/T3, using just hand tools. I remove the old bearing races with a steel drift. I then cut a slot in the removed bearing race, and squeeze the old race in a vise to slightly reduce its outside diameter which makes it a nice n installation mandrel for installing the new race. I start the new race into its bore with a brass drift and then use the DIY tool to drive the new race into position. A piece of pipe with smaller inside diameter than the OD of the race is used with a magnet to hold the DIY tool while hammering on the pipe.
I have also just used the brass drift a couple times with no DIY tool. I have done this both on the vehicle and with the bearing carrier off the vehicle in my vise, the latter approach being easier on my back.
Although I have a press, there are many operations that the Bentley manual shows being done with a press when a press is, truly, not needed. This is one such operation.
Hope this helps save you a trip to a shop. _________________ '86 Syncro Westy SVX |

The rear brake set up uses an internal drum for parking brake and outer disc rotor, there is a 'foot' that the parking brake cable lever acts on that fractured and as a cast piece has been a pain to get repaired. Finding what the original parts were from has proved elusive, some appear to be BMW e12/e23 some others are almost mercedes w112/3 but I think that it was a smorgasbord of mix and match from multiple manufacturers. The whole deal was originally installed as part of a turbo upgrade by german tuner Tony Schick. The quality is very good - water air intercooler with front mount, front mount oil cooler, multiple pumps, big disc conversion, long range fuel tank etc but now it is time to move it into the 21st century.... _________________ http://www.akciddento.com
